How to connect Notion to Claude: connector and MCP

Claude's Notion connector runs on Notion's own MCP server, on every plan. Set it up in Claude and Claude Code, see what it can change, and how to limit it.

Updated

Short answer

Yes, Claude connects to Notion. Its Notion connector is made by Notion: open Customize › Connectors, find Notion, click Connect and sign in to Notion. It takes a minute, on every Claude plan and every Notion plan. In Claude Code, run claude mcp add --transport http notion https://mcp.notion.com/mcp.

The connector acts with all of your Notion permissions. Claude can search and read, and also create, change, move and trash pages. Add Notion through Upsy instead if you want Claude limited to reading or to a few actions everywhere, Claude Code included, a record of every change, or two Notion workspaces at once.

The built-in way

Claude's Notion connector

The directory page lists Notion as built by Notion, at https://mcp.notion.com/mcp. That's Notion's hosted MCP server, a connector that lets an assistant use your workspace. Notion says it works on every Notion plan, and web connectors work for all Claude users in Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and the mobile apps (Anthropic's help).

  1. In Claude, open Customize › Connectors and find Notion in the directory.
  2. Click Connect. Notion's sign-in opens (in your browser, from the desktop app).
  3. Pick the workspace and allow access.
  4. In a chat, click +, hover over Connectors and check that Notion is on.

On Team and Enterprise, an Owner first adds Notion under Organization settings › Connectors, clicks Browse connectors, then Add to your team. Until then, members see Request instead of Connect. Each member signs in to Notion with their own account. Notion guests can't connect.

Cowork uses the same connectors, so once Notion is connected, Cowork can work in it too.

What it can do

Notion now documents about 60 tools (Notion's tool list). Claude's directory page still shows 13 older ones.

  • Search and read: pages, databases and people; your recent, favorite, shared and private pages; backlinks; comments; and a page as it looked at an earlier time.
  • Pages: create, update, move, duplicate, and move to Trash, and restore from Trash.
  • Databases: create them, change their properties, add or change views, and query rows, including with SQL across databases.
  • Working with others: comment, resolve discussions, and propose suggested edits.
  • More: file uploads, Notion Calendar events, Notion Skills, and Notion's Custom Agents.

Some tools need a Notion Business or Enterprise plan with Notion AI: search across apps connected to Notion (such as Slack and Google Drive), meeting notes, and advanced search filters. On other plans, those filters are dropped, and database queries are limited. Notion allows 180 requests a minute per connection, or 600 on Business and Enterprise (request limits).

Claude Code

Claude Code picks up your claude.ai connectors, so Notion shows up there as "claude.ai Notion". To add it yourself:

claude mcp add --transport http notion https://mcp.notion.com/mcp

Then run /mcp and sign in. Add --scope user to use it in every project.

Notion also publishes a Claude Code plugin. It adds the same server, plus slash commands and four skills: Knowledge Capture, Meeting Intelligence, Research Documentation and Spec to Implementation. Install it with /plugin marketplace add makenotion/claude-code-notion-plugin, then /plugin install notion-workspace-plugin@notion-plugin-marketplace.

Notion skills for Claude

"Notion skills" means two things:

  • Skill files from Notion that teach Claude how to work in Notion, such as turning meeting notes into tasks. Notion keeps them in its cookbook, and the Claude Code plugin above includes four.
  • Skills stored in Notion: pages in a Skills database that any connected assistant can find and follow, through the MCP server's skill tools (Notion's guide).

Where it stops

  • No read-only mode in Notion. Notion's tools "act with your full Notion permissions", per Notion's help. You can't limit the connection to some pages.
  • Per-tool limits, inside Claude only. Under Customize › Connectors › Notion, each tool can be Always allow, Needs approval or Blocked, and Team and Enterprise Owners can set them for everyone. A June 2026 report found that Claude Code ignores those settings and uses its own allow, ask and deny rules.
  • One workspace at a time. To use another, you disconnect and sign in again.
  • No record outside the chat. What Claude changed in Notion is in each conversation, with no list across chats.

Where Upsy fits

  • Limits Upsy enforces itself. Read-only, or only the Notion tools you pick. Upsy refuses the rest on its side, so the limit holds in claude.ai, Claude Desktop and Claude Code alike.
  • History: every Notion tool Claude runs is listed in Upsy, with the page or search it was about.
  • Several workspaces: up to five, each with its own access.
  • One setup: connect Notion once, and Claude, Claude Code, ChatGPT, Grok and Muse all use it, each at its own level.
  • Your other apps in the same chat, such as turning a Gmail thread into a Notion task.

What you need

  • Notion: any plan. On Notion Enterprise, a workspace owner may allow only approved AI apps, and would need to approve Upsy (Notion MCP help).
  • Claude on any plan. Upsy is a custom connector, and Free allows one.
  • On Team or Enterprise, an Owner. They add Upsy once under Organization settings › Connectors (Add › Custom › Web), then you click Connect.
  • Upsy: a free account.

Connect Notion to Claude

  1. Sign up at upsy.ai with Set up Upsy.

  2. In Upsy, open Apps, click Connect an app and pick Notion. Notion's own sign-in opens. Choose your workspace and allow access. There's no API key or integration token to copy.

  3. Open Assistants, click Add assistant and pick Claude under Which assistant?. Copy your Upsy address:

    https://upsy.ai/connect

  4. In Claude, go to Customize › Connectors. Click Add, hover over Custom and choose Web. Some accounts show an Add custom connector button instead.

  5. Name it Upsy, paste the address and click Continue twice, keeping the sign-in settings Claude detects. Then click Add.

  6. Click Connect next to Upsy. Sign in on the Upsy page that opens. Notion is ticked and set to All; switch it to Read-only if Claude should only read. Click Allow.

  7. In a chat, click +, hover over Connectors and check that Upsy is on.

Each screen is in how to add a custom connector to Claude. To allow only some Notion actions, use Pick actions on Claude's page under Assistants. For a second workspace, click Add account next to Notion on the Apps page and pick the other workspace.

Already using Upsy in Claude? Just connect Notion on the Apps page. It starts at Full access for the assistants you've added, so start a new chat, and lower the level on Claude's page if you want.

In Claude Code, run claude mcp add --transport http upsy https://upsy.ai/connect, then /mcp to sign in. Claude Code gets its own level in Upsy.

Check that it works

Using Upsy, search my Notion for "roadmap" and summarize the most recent page you find.

Claude should list matching pages, open one and summarize it. It may ask before running Upsy's app_read tool the first time. In Upsy's History, you'll see notion_search and notion_fetch under Claude.

What Claude can do with Notion

Upsy passes on Notion's own tools. Claude lists them with app_tools, runs the reading ones with app_read and the rest with app_call.

With Read-only, Claude can:

  • Search your workspace, and look up people, teamspaces and groups.
  • Open any page, database or saved view you can open, and see what changed in it and who changed it.
  • Query a database: rows, filters, saved views, or SQL across databases.
  • Read comments and suggested edits, and list your recent, favorite, shared and private pages.
  • Read your meeting notes and Notion Calendar events, on plans that include them.

With Full access, it can also:

  • Create pages, including from a database template, and change a page's content or properties, such as a task's status.
  • Move, duplicate and trash pages and databases, and restore them from Trash.
  • Create databases, change their properties, and add or change views.
  • Comment, reply, resolve discussions, and propose or accept suggested edits.
  • Upload files to a page, and create or change Notion Calendar events.

With Pick actions, you tick tools one by one. For example: search, read, create pages and comment, but not change, move or trash existing ones. A tool Notion adds later stays off until you tick it.

Read-only allows only tools Notion marks read-only, and never one whose name says it changes something, such as create, update, move or delete.

Prompts to try

  • "Find the notes from Tuesday's design review in Notion and list the action items with owners."
  • "In my Tasks database, show what's assigned to me and due this week."
  • "Read this spec and draft a Notion project page with milestones and tasks. Show me the outline before you create anything."
  • "Set the status of 'Pricing page' in the Roadmap database to Done."
  • "What changed on the Launch plan page since Monday, and who changed it?"
  • "Write my weekly update from my Notion tasks and this week's calendar."

Troubleshooting

Notion says the app isn't approved

On Notion Enterprise, owners can limit connections to an approved list under Settings › Connections › Permissions. Ask an owner to approve Upsy (or Claude, for the built-in connector), then connect again.

The Notion sign-in fails or loops

Finish the sign-in in the browser window it opens, then try again. If it keeps failing, disconnect Notion under Customize › Connectors (or on Upsy's Apps page) and connect it again.

"The user hasn't allowed you to use Notion's …"

That's Upsy refusing a tool outside Claude's level, such as notion-update-page on Read-only. Change Notion's level on Claude's page in Upsy if Claude should be able to do it.

Claude uses its own Notion connector instead of Upsy

With both connected, Claude may pick either. Say "using Upsy", or switch the Notion connector off for that chat under + › Connectors.

A page is missing, or search finds less than you expect

Notion's tools see only pages your Notion account can open, and a search returns up to 50 results. Without Business or Enterprise and Notion AI, search can't filter by date or by who edited a page, so try the page's title. If Notion answers rate_limited, wait a moment and ask again, or ask Claude to do fewer things at once.

Security and privacy

  • Notion's own sign-in. Upsy connects to Notion's MCP server with your Notion login, and the token stays in Upsy. Claude calls Upsy, Upsy calls Notion, and the level you set narrows what Claude may do.
  • History: every Notion tool Claude runs is listed under Claude, and so are refused attempts. No one can edit or delete it.
  • Alerts: an email when one assistant opens 100 or more items in 10 minutes or deletes 50 or more, and when a new assistant or app is connected.
  • Trash, not gone. Notion's tools move pages to Trash, where you can restore them.
  • Claude's prompts are the check. Upsy has no approval step of its own. It marks app_read as read-only and app_call as able to change things, so Claude's tool permissions can treat them differently.
  • Turning it off: set Notion to No access for Claude, click Remove Claude on its page in Upsy, or disconnect Notion on the Apps page.

FAQ

Does Claude have a Notion integration?

Yes. Notion is in Claude's Connectors Directory, built by Notion, on every Claude plan. Upsy adds per-action access, several workspaces and a history on top.

Is there a Notion MCP server for Claude?

Yes. Notion hosts one at https://mcp.notion.com/mcp, and Claude's connector uses it. So does Upsy.

Can Claude edit Notion pages?

Yes. With Claude's connector, Claude can create, change, move and trash pages unless you block those tools. Through Upsy, it needs Full access, or Pick actions with those tools ticked.

Can I make Claude read-only in Notion?

Set Notion's write tools to Blocked under Customize › Connectors, which holds in Claude's apps. Through Upsy, set Notion to Read-only for Claude; Upsy refuses changes itself, in Claude Code too.

Can Claude use two Notion workspaces?

Not at once with Claude's connector, which holds one. With Upsy, connect up to five and say which one to use.

Does Notion work in Claude Code and Cowork?
