How to connect a personal Outlook account to Claude
Claude's Microsoft 365 connector needs a work account and an admin. How to let Claude read and send email from a personal Outlook.com or Hotmail account.
Updated
Short answer
Claude's own Microsoft 365 connector doesn't accept personal accounts (@outlook.com, @hotmail.com, @live.com). It needs a work Microsoft 365 account and an admin's consent. For a personal account, sign in to Outlook in Upsy's cloud browser and add Upsy to Claude as a custom connector. Claude then reads, searches and sends your Outlook mail in its own browser tab while you watch. Setup takes about ten minutes, on any Claude plan.
The built-in way
Claude's Microsoft 365 connector works on every plan. It covers Outlook mail and calendar, OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams. Anthropic's page is clear about who can use it:
- Work accounts only. Personal accounts such as @outlook.com, @hotmail.com and @live.com can't be used. You need a work account tied to a Microsoft Entra tenant.
- An admin first. A Microsoft Entra Global Administrator grants one-time consent for the whole organization. On Team and Enterprise, the Claude Owner also turns the connector on.
- Reading by default. Claude searches mail and reviews meetings. It can draft and send only if your admin enables write tools. Even then it can't send or forward attachments.
If you have a work account and your admin has done this, use Claude's connector. It's the simpler path.
With a personal account, the sign-in stops on Microsoft's page with "You can't sign in here with a personal account. Use your work or school account instead." That error is tracked in GitHub issue #53408, opened in April 2026 and still open, with people asking for personal accounts. The workaround people mention there is to forward Hotmail to Gmail and use Claude's Gmail connector. That works for reading, but Claude then replies from your Gmail address.
What you need
- A Claude account on any plan. Free allows one custom connector, and Upsy uses it.
- Your Outlook.com, Hotmail or Live address and password, plus your phone or authenticator app in case Microsoft asks you to confirm the sign-in.
- No Microsoft 365 subscription and no admin.
Connect personal Outlook to Claude
Sign up free at upsy.ai by clicking Set up Upsy.
In Upsy, open Browser. This is your own browser, running in the cloud. Open the Outlook bookmark, or go to outlook.com, and sign in to your Microsoft account yourself. Tick "stay signed in" if Microsoft offers it. The login stays saved in the browser.
Click Add assistant, and under Which assistant? pick Claude. Copy your Upsy address:
https://upsy.ai/connectIn Claude, open Customize › Connectors and click Add custom connector. Name it Upsy, paste the address and click Add.
Click Connect next to Upsy. On the Upsy page that opens, sign in and make sure the cloud browser is ticked, then click Allow.
In a chat, check that Upsy is on under + › Connectors.
On Team or Enterprise, an Owner adds Upsy first under Organization settings › Connectors. See the custom connector guide.
Check that it works
Send this:
Open my Outlook inbox in my Upsy browser and list the five newest emails, with sender and subject.
Claude opens outlook.com in a new tab, grouped under its name, and lists what it finds. Open Browser in Upsy to watch it. You can click into the tab and take over at any point.
What Claude can do with Outlook
Here's how it works. Upsy has no Outlook tools for reading mail. Claude uses the outlook.com website in your cloud browser, the way you would.
| Task | How it works | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Read the inbox and open emails | Cloud browser | Claude reads the page as text. |
| Search mail | Cloud browser | Uses Outlook's own search box. |
| Reply or forward | Cloud browser | Claude types in Outlook's editor. Ask it to stop before Send if you want to check. |
| Send a new email | Cloud browser | Same as replying. |
| Calendar | Cloud browser | Outlook's calendar pages, the same way. |
| Move, flag or delete | Cloud browser | Any button you'd click. Say clearly what's allowed. |
Browser work is slower than an app's API, and it shows on screen as Claude goes. In return, it covers everything outlook.com can do.
What Upsy can't do yet:
- No Outlook connector yet. Nobody can connect Upsy's Outlook connector today. It shows Pending on the Apps page while Upsy waits for Microsoft's approval. Once Microsoft approves, it will send email through Microsoft's own API, for personal and work accounts. It's for sending only, so reading will stay in the browser.
- No Outlook alerts. Upsy's mass-send and mass-delete alerts count what goes through its email and app tools, not clicks in the browser.
- Not in the background. Claude works in Outlook when you ask in a chat. It doesn't watch your inbox.
Prompts to try
- "In my Upsy browser, find emails in Outlook from my bank this month and summarize them."
- "Open the newest email from Sam in Outlook and draft a reply saying Thursday works. Show me before sending."
- "Search my Hotmail for the order confirmation from last week and tell me the delivery date."
- "Go through the first page of my Outlook inbox and tell me which emails need an answer."
- "Write and send an email from my Outlook to alex@example.com saying I'll be ten minutes late."
Troubleshooting
"You can't sign in here with a personal account"
That's Claude's Microsoft 365 connector rejecting your Outlook.com or Hotmail address. It won't change until Anthropic supports personal accounts. Use the browser route above.
Microsoft asks you to confirm the sign-in
The cloud browser is a new device to Microsoft, so it may ask for a code or an approval in the Authenticator app. Do it in Upsy's Browser. If Microsoft locks the account after unusual activity, sign in at outlook.com on your own device first, then try again.
Outlook shows Pending in Upsy's Apps
Upsy's Outlook connector is waiting for Microsoft to approve Upsy, and no one can connect it yet. Skip it. The browser covers reading and sending today.
Claude says it can't reach Outlook
Ask it to "use my Upsy browser". If it still can't, open Claude's page in Upsy and check that the cloud browser is on.
Claude got signed out
Open Outlook in Upsy's Browser and sign in again. Claude can't sign in for you.
Security and privacy
- You sign in to Microsoft yourself, in your own cloud browser. Claude never receives your password.
- Claude sees what's on the Outlook pages it opens, and nothing else in your Microsoft account.
- Each assistant works in its own labelled tabs, and you can watch live and step in.
- Upsy's History records each page Claude opens and each click. It never records what Claude typed.
- Upsy has no approval prompt of its own. Claude's own tool prompts are the check, so don't click Always allow for the browser tools if you want to approve each send.
- To stop it, turn Claude off on the Assistants page, take the browser away on Claude's page, or sign out of Outlook in the Browser.
FAQ
Can Claude connect to a personal Outlook account?
Not with its own Microsoft 365 connector, which only takes work accounts. With Upsy, Claude uses your personal Outlook through a cloud browser you've signed in to.
Can Claude send emails through Outlook?
Yes. With a work account, Claude's connector can send if your admin has turned on write tools. With a personal account, Claude sends from outlook.com in Upsy's cloud browser.
Does Claude's Outlook connector work with Hotmail?
No. Hotmail, Outlook.com and Live addresses are personal Microsoft accounts, and Anthropic's connector doesn't support them.
Do I need a Microsoft 365 subscription?
No. A free Outlook.com or Hotmail account works in the browser.
Can Claude read my Outlook calendar?
In the cloud browser, Claude can open Outlook's calendar and read or add events, like you would. Upsy has no Outlook calendar connector.
