How to connect Google Docs to Claude and let it edit

Claude now edits Google Docs in beta. What its Docs connector and add-on can do, where they stop, and how Upsy adds real suggestions, comments and limits.

Updated

Short answer

Yes, Claude can edit Google Docs. Since October 6, 2026, Anthropic has two ways, both in beta. The Google Docs connector opens a Doc in a pane next to your chat and edits it live. The Claude for Google Workspace add-on puts Claude in a sidebar inside Docs, on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. Either takes a couple of minutes to set up.

Add Docs through Upsy instead, as a custom connector, if you want Claude's changes to land as Google Docs suggestions you accept, comments your team can see, read-only access, or more than one Google account. That takes about five minutes, on any Claude plan.

The built-in way

Anthropic has three separate pieces for Google files.

The Google Drive connector

The Google Workspace connectors (Gmail, Calendar and Drive) are on every plan. With Drive, Claude searches and reads your Docs (text only, not images), and + › Add from Google Drive attaches a Doc to a chat, kept in sync. It doesn't edit an existing Doc.

The Google Docs connector (beta)

Docs, Sheets and Slides each have their own connector now. Turn Google Docs on under + › Connectors in a chat. Per Anthropic's help page, Claude can then:

  • edit a Doc live in a pane beside the chat, while you work in it too
  • create a new Google Doc
  • "read and work with comments and suggestions"

Say "Google Doc": a plain "doc" makes a downloadable file instead. The pane works on claude.ai in Chrome and in Claude Desktop with its built-in browser on; elsewhere, click Open in Google on the file card. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner turns the connectors on first, and a Google Workspace admin may need to trust "Claude for Google Drive". Anthropic doesn't state a plan limit for the Docs connector.

The Claude for Google Workspace add-on (beta)

The add-on works the other way round: Claude comes to the Doc. Install it from the Google Workspace Marketplace, then open a Doc and choose Extensions › Claude › Open Claude. Its help page lists Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise.

It edits in place, as you, and every change shows in the Doc's version history. By default it asks before each edit (Ask before edits), and it can show text changes as cards you accept or reject. Its limits in Docs: it can't read, reply to or resolve comments, can't accept or reject existing suggestions, and can't create tabs. Its own edits are direct edits, not suggestions. It works only on the file it's opened in, and not in Firefox.

To restyle or restructure the Doc you have open, the add-on is the better tool. Upsy changes text, not formatting.

Where Upsy fits

  • Real suggestions. Upsy writes changes in Google's Suggesting mode, from your Google account. They wait in the Doc until you or a teammate accept or reject them.
  • Comments. Claude can comment on a passage.
  • Limits that stick. Set Docs to Read-only for Claude, or pick actions, like "read and comment, never change text". Direct edits stay off unless you turn them on.
  • More accounts. Up to five Google accounts, each with its own level. Claude's own connectors use one.
  • One setup, one record. The same Docs connection works in ChatGPT, Grok and Muse, and every action is in Upsy's History.

What you need

  • Any Claude plan. Free allows one custom connector, and Upsy takes it. On Team or Enterprise, an Owner adds Upsy first under Organization settings › Connectors (Add › Custom › Web).
  • A Google account that can open the Docs. On Google Workspace, an admin may block third-party apps.
  • A free Upsy account.

Connect Google Docs to Claude

In Upsy, one Google Drive sign-in covers Drive, Docs and Sheets.

  1. Go to upsy.ai and click Set up Upsy.

  2. Open Apps and click Connect an app. Find Google Docs and click Connect. Upsy explains that Google Drive connects through Composio for now. Click Continue, pick your Google account and allow access.

  3. Open Assistants, click Add assistant and pick Claude. Copy your Upsy address:

    https://upsy.ai/connect

  4. In Claude, open Customize › Connectors, click Add, hover over Custom and choose Web (some accounts still show an Add custom connector button). Name it Upsy, paste the address and click Continue twice, keeping the detected sign-in settings. Then click Add.

  5. Click Connect next to Upsy. On the Upsy page that opens, sign in. Google Drive is ticked, set to All. Change it to Read-only if Claude should only read. Click Allow.

  6. In a chat, open + › Connectors and check that Upsy is on.

To fine-tune later, open Claude's page under Assistants in Upsy and choose Pick actions for Google Drive. That's also where you turn on Edit a Google Doc directly, which full access leaves out. The custom connector guide covers the Claude side in more detail.

Check that it works

Pick a Doc you don't mind changing, and send:

Using Upsy, open my Google Doc called "Test" and suggest a shorter first sentence. Make it a suggestion I can accept.

Claude may ask you to allow the tool first. In the Doc, the new wording appears as a colored suggestion. Upsy's History shows "read the Doc Test" and "suggested changes to the Doc Test" under Claude.

What Claude can do with Google Docs

  • Find and read. Search Drive by a Doc's name or the words in it, or list recent files. Claude reads a Doc as Markdown, with headings, lists, tables, links and @-mentions, from every tab. Suggestions nobody has accepted yet are marked, so Claude doesn't mistake them for final text. Long Docs come in parts.
  • Suggest changes. Replace or delete a passage, change every place a word appears, or add paragraphs at the end, up to 50 changes at once. Only the words that differ are marked: changing "Monday" to "Tuesday" in a long sentence suggests just that word.
  • Comment on a passage Claude finds by its text.
  • Create a new Google Doc from text, up to 3 MB, in any folder.
  • Edit directly, off unless you pick it. Version history keeps the old text.

What Upsy can't do in Docs: formatting, images, tables, new tabs, reading or resolving comments, or accepting suggestions. It reads Word files in Drive but doesn't edit them. It never shares, moves, trashes or deletes files.

Level What Claude can do
Read-only Search, list recent files, read Docs and other files
Full access Also suggest changes, comment, and save new Docs (and update Sheets)
Pick actions Only the tools you tick. The only way to allow direct edits
No access Nothing

For spreadsheets, see Google Sheets with Claude.

Prompts to try

  • "Read my 'Q4 plan' Doc in Google Docs and tell me which sections have no owner. Don't change anything."
  • "In the contract template, suggest 'Acme Inc.' everywhere it says 'Acme Corp'."
  • "Suggest edits to the intro of 'Launch brief' so it's under 80 words and leads with the date."
  • "Comment on the pricing paragraph in 'Board memo': 'Do these numbers include VAT?'"
  • "Add a 'Next steps' section at the end of the project Doc with the three action items from this chat, as a suggestion."
  • "Write up these meeting notes as a new Google Doc called 'Kickoff notes' in my Meetings folder."

Troubleshooting

Claude uses its own Google Docs connector, not Upsy

If both are on, Claude can pick either. Say "using Upsy" in the prompt, or turn the built-in Google Docs connector off for that chat under + › Connectors. After setup, Upsy shows a Help Claude remember message you can paste into Claude, so later chats prefer Upsy.

"Couldn't find … in the Doc" or "… appears 3 times"

Upsy finds the text to change exactly as it read it, and it must be unique. The Doc may have changed since Claude read it, or the phrase is in several places. Ask Claude to read the Doc again and quote more of the sentence, or to change every place it appears.

Claude says it can't edit the Doc directly

By design: full access suggests, it doesn't overwrite. To allow direct edits, choose Pick actions for Google Drive on Claude's page in Upsy, turn on Edit a Google Doc directly, and start a new chat.

The suggestion isn't there

Look for colored text in the Doc, or open Tools › Review suggested edits. Check that Claude worked in the Doc you meant: its reply links to the Doc it changed.

Google's sign-in screen names Composio

Expected for now. Until Google finishes reviewing Upsy's own app, Google Drive signs in through Composio's verified Google app, which asks for full Drive access. Upsy uses it only for the tools above.

Security and privacy

  • Claude never gets your Google tokens. It calls Upsy, and Upsy calls Google.
  • Suggestions wait for you. Collaborators see Claude's suggestions and comments under your name, so treat them as your own.
  • History lists every read, suggestion, comment and edit under Claude, with the Doc's name, plus failed attempts and why.
  • Alerts email you when one assistant reads from your apps 100 or more times within 10 minutes. There's no alert for edits, which is one more reason to keep direct editing off.
  • Docs from other people can hide instructions aimed at AI, as Anthropic's add-on page warns. Review suggestions before you accept them.
  • Turning it off: set Google Drive to No access for Claude, click Remove Claude on its page, or disconnect Google Drive in Apps.

FAQ

Can Claude edit Google Docs?

Yes. Claude's Google Docs connector and its Google Workspace add-on both edit Docs, in beta. Through Upsy, Claude suggests changes you accept in the Doc, and edits directly only if you allow it.

Is there a Google Docs MCP server for Claude?

Anthropic's Docs connector is built in. Upsy is a remote MCP server you add as a custom connector, with Docs tools, access levels and a history.

Can Claude suggest edits instead of changing my Doc?

Through Upsy, that's the default: full access means suggestions. The add-on can show changes as cards to accept in its sidebar, but what it writes to the Doc are direct edits.

Can Claude read comments in Google Docs?

Anthropic's Docs connector can, per its help page. The add-on can't. Upsy adds comments but doesn't read them.

Can I connect two Google accounts to Claude?

Not with Claude's own connectors, which use one account. With Upsy, connect up to five and name the one to use, as in multiple Gmail accounts in Claude.
