How to connect Google Sheets to Claude and let it edit
Claude can now edit Google Sheets, in beta. What its Sheets connector and add-on do, and how to add Sheets through Upsy with read-only or per-action access.
Updated
Short answer
Yes, Claude can edit Google Sheets. Since October 6, 2026, Anthropic offers two ways, both in beta: a Google Sheets connector that edits files from a Claude chat, and the Claude for Google Workspace add-on, a sidebar inside Sheets on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. Either takes a minute to turn on. Connect Sheets through Upsy instead if Claude should only read or only add rows, work in more than one Google account, or leave a record of every cell it changes. That takes about five minutes, on any Claude plan.
The built-in way
Google Drive connector: reading
Claude's Google Workspace connectors are open to all Claude users. The Drive connector reads Sheets, Slides, PDFs and Office files as text, and can upload a file converted to a Google format. Editing an existing Sheet is a separate connector's job.
Google Sheets connector (beta): editing from the chat
Docs, Sheets and Slides each have their own connector. Click + in the chat, hover over Connectors and switch on Google Sheets. Claude can then create Sheets and edit them live in a pane beside the chat.
- The pane works on claude.ai in Chrome, and in Claude Desktop with its built-in browser on (off by default on Enterprise). Otherwise, use Open in Google on the file card.
- Claude re-reads the file before each change, but Anthropic says to check the result in a busy Sheet.
- On Team and Enterprise, an Owner turns the connectors on first. Anthropic doesn't say whether Free includes it.
Claude for Google Workspace add-on (beta): editing inside Sheets
Install Claude from the Google Workspace Marketplace, open a Sheet, choose Extensions › Claude › Open Claude and sign in. It's on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise (Anthropic's add-on help). Claude writes and fixes formulas, cleans data, builds models on new tabs, and adds pivot tables and native charts (announcement). By default it waits for you to allow each edit (Ask before edits); Accept all edits lets it run.
Its limits: only the file you have open, the sidebar must stay open, each operation stops after six minutes, and Firefox isn't supported.
Google's own Sheets MCP server (preview)
Google's Sheets MCP server reads values and can update cells and formulas and insert rows. It's in Google's Workspace Developer Preview Program and needs a Google Cloud project and your own OAuth client. Google says adding it to Claude needs a paid plan. It's built for developers.
If you're on a paid plan and want Claude to build a model inside one sheet, the add-on is the strongest tool here, and you may need nothing else.
Where Upsy fits
- Limits, not just prompts. Make Sheets Read-only for Claude, or pick single actions, such as adding rows but never overwriting cells.
- More than one Google account. Claude's connectors use the one account you connected. Upsy holds up to five, each with its own access.
- A record. Upsy's History lists every Sheet Claude reads or changes, down to the cells: "changed A7:B7 in the Sheet Budget".
- Every assistant. The same Sheets work in ChatGPT, Grok, Muse and Claude Code.
- Any plan. Free allows one custom connector, and Upsy fits all your apps into it.
Upsy works from the chat, by cell range. It doesn't format cells, build charts or pivot tables, or delete rows.
What you need
- Claude on any plan. On Free, Upsy uses your one custom connector. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner adds it under Organization settings › Connectors first.
- The Google account that has your Sheets. On Google Workspace, an admin may restrict third-party apps.
- A free Upsy account.
Connect Google Sheets to Claude
Sheets comes with Upsy's Google Drive connection: one sign-in covers Drive, Docs and Sheets.
Go to upsy.ai and click Set up Upsy.
Open Apps, click Connect an app, and click Connect on the Google Sheets card. Upsy explains that Google Drive connects through Composio for now. Click Continue, pick your Google account and allow access.
For a second Google account, click Connect an app again and use Add account on Google Drive.
Open Assistants, click Add assistant and pick Claude under Which assistant?. Copy your Upsy address:
https://upsy.ai/connectIn Claude, open Customize › Connectors, click Add, hover over Custom and choose Web (some accounts still show an Add custom connector button). Name it Upsy, paste the address and click Continue twice, keeping the detected sign-in settings. Then click Add.
Click Connect next to Upsy. On the page that says "Claude wants to access your Upsy", sign in. Set Google Drive to Read-only if Claude should only read, or All. Click Allow.
To allow only some Sheets actions, open Claude's page under Assistants and choose Pick actions for Google Drive.
In a chat, check under + › Connectors that Upsy is on. How to add a custom connector to Claude covers every plan.
Check that it works
Ask Claude:
Using Upsy, find the Google Sheet I edited most recently. List its tabs and show me the first five rows.
Claude should look up your recent Drive files, call sheets_read, and answer with the tabs and rows. Upsy's History shows "read the Sheet" and its name under Claude.
What Claude can do with your Sheets
Upsy gives Claude four Sheets tools on top of Drive's search and save:
- Read a Google Sheet: the tabs and their sizes, and any range in A1 notation, labeled with row numbers and column letters. With no range, a tab's first 200 rows. It returns values as displayed, not the formulas behind them.
- Update cells in a Google Sheet: writes rows of values from a start cell, as if typed, so formulas like
=SUM(B2:B9), numbers and dates work. Up to 10,000 cells per call. It overwrites what's there. - Add rows to a Google Sheet: appends rows after the last row of a tab's table.
- Add a tab to a Google Sheet: adds an empty tab.
Claude finds a Sheet by searching Drive, Shared Drives included, or from a link you paste. To start a new Sheet, Drive's save tool turns CSV into a Google Sheet, up to 3 MB. Nothing in Upsy deletes rows, tabs or files.
The level is set for Google Drive as a whole, so it covers Docs too; see Google Docs with Claude.
| Level | What Claude can do with Sheets |
|---|---|
| Read-only | Find and read Sheets |
| Full access | Also update cells, add rows and tabs, and save new Sheets |
| Pick actions | Only the tools you switch on, such as reading and adding rows |
| No access | Nothing |
Prompts to try
- "Add these to my Expenses 2026 sheet: Oct 14, client lunch, 46.80; Oct 15, train to Leeds, 72.10."
- "In the Q4 pipeline sheet, which deals over 10,000 are still at the Proposal stage?"
- "Compare the Budget and Actuals tabs and list the five biggest gaps. Don't change anything."
- "In the Inventory tab, put a formula in column F that multiplies D by E, for every row with data."
- "Log this month's invoice emails in my Invoices sheet: sender, amount, due date." This needs Gmail connected in Upsy too.
Troubleshooting
Claude made a spreadsheet file, not a Google Sheet
The built-in connectors do that when a request doesn't name Google. Ask for a "Google Sheet" or paste its link. To use Upsy's tools, start with "Using Upsy".
"Access blocked: your institution's admin needs to review Claude for Google Drive"
That's Claude's own Google connection on a work account. A Google Workspace admin marks Claude as trusted under Security › Access and data control › API controls. Reconnect about 15 minutes later. The same settings can block Upsy's sign-in; then the admin allows the app named on Google's screen.
Google's sign-in names Composio
Expected for now. While Google reviews Upsy's own Google app, the Drive connection signs in through Composio's verified one. It asks for full Drive access, which also covers Sheets.
Claude says it can't update the Sheet
At Read-only, Claude doesn't get Upsy's writing tools at all. Raise Google Drive's level on Claude's page in Upsy. With two Google accounts, check the level of the one Claude used.
Claude overwrote cells you wanted to keep
Updating replaces what's in the range. Restore it from the Sheet's version history. Next time, ask Claude to read the range first, or to add rows instead.
Claude uses its own Google connector instead of Upsy
With both on, Claude may pick either. Say "using Upsy", or turn Claude's Google connectors off for that chat under + › Connectors.
The add-on stops partway
"Exceeded maximum execution time" means a step hit the six-minute limit: ask Claude to continue, or split the job. If actions fail, use a browser profile signed in to one Google account.
Security and privacy
- Claude never gets your Google login. It calls Upsy's tools, and Upsy calls Google through Composio, which doesn't store what passes through.
- History records each Sheet Claude reads or changes, with the range written.
- Alerts email you if Claude reads 100 or more files or emails within 10 minutes (Sheet reads count), and when a new assistant or app is connected.
- No approval step of Upsy's own. Claude's tool prompts are the check before each change, so keep important Sheets at Read-only or Pick actions.
- Turning it off: set Google Drive to No access for Claude, click Remove Claude on its page, or disconnect Google Drive under Apps.
FAQ
Can Claude edit Google Sheets?
Yes. The Google Sheets connector edits from a chat, and the Claude for Google Workspace add-on edits inside Sheets on paid plans, both in beta. Through Upsy, Claude updates cells, adds rows and adds tabs on any plan.
Is there a Google Sheets connector for Claude?
Yes, in beta since October 2026, separate from Drive. Turn it on under + › Connectors in a chat.
Is there a Google Sheets MCP server for Claude?
Google has one in developer preview, built for developers. Upsy is a ready-made MCP server with Sheets tools, added as a custom connector in minutes.
Can Claude see the formulas in my Sheet?
Not through Upsy, which reads values as displayed, though it can write formulas. The add-on works with formulas directly, including fixing broken ones.
Can I use Google Sheets with Claude on the Free plan?
Through Upsy, yes: it uses Free's one custom connector. The add-on needs a paid plan, and Anthropic doesn't say whether Free gets the Sheets connector.
Can Claude work with Sheets in two Google accounts?
Not with its own connectors, which use one Google account. Connect both in Upsy, and Claude can use either at its own level.
