How to connect Google Drive, Docs and Sheets to Grok

Give Grok your Google Drive so it can find and read files, suggest edits in Google Docs and update Google Sheets, with you choosing what it may change.

Updated

Short answer

Grok's built-in Google Drive connector searches, reads and creates files in your Drive, including new Google Docs. You link it at grok.com/connectors in about a minute, on any Grok plan. Its docs don't describe editing an existing Doc or Sheet. Through Upsy, Grok can also suggest changes in a Google Doc for you to accept, comment on it, and update cells in a Google Sheet, and you choose which of those it may do.

The built-in way

Grok's Google Drive connector can:

  • search Docs, Sheets, Slides and other files by title or content, and filter by starred, shared, date or folder
  • read a file so Grok can summarize or analyze it
  • create and write files, "including new Google Docs"
  • create folders, list what's in them, and trash files
  • save files Grok makes, like spreadsheets and reports, to any folder

Reading uses Google's drive.readonly permission. Writing needs the full drive permission, which the docs mark as optional, and you see it on Google's consent screen when you sign in.

So, to the common questions:

  • Can Grok read Google Docs? Yes.
  • Can Grok edit Google Docs? It can create new ones. The docs don't say it can edit an existing Doc.
  • Can Grok edit Google Sheets? Not according to grok.com's docs. Grok Bot can: its Google Sheets plugin "reads and edits cells", per Cursor's help page. Its Google Drive plugin only searches and reads.

If you only need Grok to find and summarize files, the built-in connector is enough. The Grok connectors overview shows what else Grok has built in.

What you need

  • A Grok account. Connectors are open to every Grok user. On Grok Business or Enterprise, a team admin has to add a connector in the xAI console first, Upsy included.
  • A Google account. Grok can only reach files that account can open. On Google Workspace, your admin may restrict third-party apps.
  • A free Upsy account.

Connect Google Drive, Docs and Sheets to Grok

In Upsy, one connector covers Drive, Docs and Sheets.

  1. Go to upsy.ai, click Set up Upsy and create your account.
  2. On the Apps page, find Google Drive and click Connect. Upsy says it connects through Composio for now. Click Continue, pick your Google account and allow access.
  3. On the Assistants page, click Add assistant, choose Grok under Which assistant?, and click Copy prompt.
  4. Paste it into a Grok chat. Approve the card, then open the sign-in link.
  5. On the Upsy page, sign in. Switch Google Drive to Read-only to start, or leave full access if Grok may save files, edit Sheets and suggest changes in Docs. Click Allow.

To add Upsy by hand, open Connectors on grok.com, click New Connector, then Custom, and paste:

https://upsy.ai/connect

In Grok Bot, paste the prompt into a Bot chat, then type @ and pick Upsy.

Check that it works

Ask Grok:

Using Upsy, find the Google Doc I edited most recently and summarize it in three bullets.

Grok should name the Doc, link to it and summarize it. Upsy's History shows the read under Grok, with the file's name.

What Grok can do with Drive, Docs and Sheets

Google Drive

  • Search files by name or content, and list the most recently changed ones.
  • Read a file: Docs and Slides as text, Sheets as CSV, and the text of PDFs and Word files.
  • Save a new file: text or a file up to 3 MB that Grok made, or a copy of an email attachment (with Gmail connected) or one of your Upsy files up to 24 MB, which Upsy copies itself. It can go in a folder, and text can become a Google Doc, or CSV a Google Sheet.
  • Drive tools never change, move or delete your existing files.

Google Docs

  • Read a Doc with its headings, lists, tables and tabs.
  • Suggest changes: replace or delete text, or add paragraphs at the end. They appear as suggestions, which you accept or reject in the Doc, as with Google's own Suggesting mode.
  • Comment on a passage.
  • Edit directly, without suggestions. This is off unless you pick it. The Doc's version history keeps the old text.

Google Sheets

  • Read a Sheet's tabs and any range, with row numbers and column letters.
  • Update cells as if typed, formulas like =SUM(B2:B9) included, up to 10,000 cells at a time. This overwrites what's there.
  • Add rows after the last row of a table, and add a new tab.

Upsy can't edit Slides, change sharing, or rename, move or trash files.

Level What Grok can do
Read-only Search, list recent files, read files, Docs and Sheets
Full access Also save new files, update Sheets, suggest changes and comment in Docs
Pick actions Only what you tick. The only way to allow direct Doc edits
No access Nothing

Prompts to try

  • "Find my 'Q3 budget' sheet and tell me which rows are over budget."
  • "Read my CV and suggest tighter wording for the summary, as suggestions I can accept."
  • "Comment on the pricing paragraph in the proposal doc asking Mark to confirm the numbers."
  • "Add today's expenses to my 'Expenses 2026' sheet: coffee 12.50, taxi 48."
  • "Turn this meeting summary into a Google Doc in my Meetings folder."
  • "Save the contract PDF from Lisa's email yesterday to my Drive."

Troubleshooting

You may see Composio on Google's sign-in screen

Expected for now. While Google reviews Upsy's own Google app, Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Drive sign in through Composio's verified Google app. Google's consent screen names Composio, not Upsy, and asks for full Drive access. Upsy uses it only for the tools above, and only when an assistant you allowed asks. This is temporary.

Grok says it changed a Doc, but the text looks the same

Its changes are suggestions. Open the Doc and look for colored suggested text, or use Review suggested edits in the Tools menu to accept or reject them.

Grok says it can't edit the Doc directly

That's on purpose. Full access lets Grok suggest, not edit. To allow direct edits, open Grok's page in Assistants, choose Pick actions for Google Drive, and turn on Edit a Google Doc directly.

A Sheet update overwrote cells

Updating cells replaces what's there. Restore it from the Sheet's version history, and ask Grok to add rows rather than update, or to read the range first.

Grok can't find a file

Search matches names and content in the Google account you connected. Check that the file is in that account, and try its exact title or a phrase from it.

The file is too big to save

Files Grok makes go up to 3 MB. Copies of an email attachment or an Upsy file go up to 24 MB.

Security and privacy

  • Grok never sees your Google password or tokens. It calls Upsy's tools, and Upsy calls Google.
  • History lists each search, read, save and edit under Grok, with details like the file's name.
  • Alerts email you if one assistant reads from your apps 100 or more times in 10 minutes.
  • Your files stay where they are. Upsy never deletes Drive files, and suggestions wait for you in the Doc.
  • Turning it off: set Google Drive to No access for Grok, or click Remove Grok in Assistants. Disconnecting Drive on the Apps page also removes the connection at Composio.

Upsy is built by Upstash and is free for personal use. It has no ads and doesn't sell your data.

FAQ

Can Grok access Google Drive?

Yes. Grok's built-in Google Drive connector searches, reads and creates files, and Upsy adds suggestions in Docs, Sheets updates and per-action access.

Can Grok read Google Docs?

Yes, with either Grok's own connector or Upsy. Upsy reads a Doc's headings, lists, tables and tabs.

Grok's own connector creates new Docs. Through Upsy, Grok suggests changes you accept in the Doc, adds comments, and edits directly only if you allow it.

Can Grok edit Google Sheets?

Through Upsy, yes: it updates cells, adds rows and adds tabs. Grok Bot's own Google Sheets plugin also edits cells.

Can Grok delete my Drive files?

Not through Upsy, which has no tool that deletes, trashes or moves files. Grok's built-in connector can trash files.
