Can ChatGPT edit Google Docs? Connect Docs to ChatGPT

ChatGPT reaches Google Docs through its Google Drive app and can update them on paid plans. What it can't do, and how Upsy adds suggestions and comments.

Updated

Short answer

ChatGPT has no separate Google Docs app. Docs come with its Google Drive app, which you connect under Settings › Plugins in a couple of minutes. It finds and reads your Docs. On Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare, on the web, ChatGPT can keep a Doc open beside the chat and, where supported, update it directly. ChatGPT Work, on paid plans except Free and Go, can create and edit Google Docs too.

So yes, ChatGPT can edit Google Docs on a paid plan. OpenAI's pages don't say it can suggest changes or comment. Add Docs through Upsy as a custom MCP server when you want edits as suggestions you accept in the Doc, comments on a passage, read-only access, or several Google accounts with their own limits. That takes about five minutes.

The built-in way

One Google Drive app for Drive, Docs, Sheets and Slides

On March 25, 2026, OpenAI folded its Google file apps into Google Drive. If you connected the old Google Docs app before, it keeps working. Reconnect Google Drive to get the newer actions.

To connect it (OpenAI's setup page):

  1. Open Plugins or Apps, whichever your ChatGPT shows.
  2. Find Google Drive and connect your account.
  3. Sign in to Google and review the permissions.

ChatGPT then searches your Drive and reads Docs you can open. One of OpenAI's example prompts is "Update this document with the action items from our meeting." Creating, updating, moving, sharing or deleting a file needs the matching Google permission, here the full drive and documents scopes (Google data controls FAQ), and must be allowed in your workspace.

A Doc open beside the chat

Since August 13, 2026, Google Drive files show up in ChatGPT's Library. You can @-mention a Doc, keep it open beside the conversation, or point ChatGPT at a whole folder. In the release notes, OpenAI says "where supported and authorized, ChatGPT can update the source file directly". Limits it lists:

  • My Drive and files shared directly with you only. Shared Drives aren't included yet.
  • "Some Google Drive editing and collaboration features aren't yet available."
  • Web only for now. Mobile will follow.
  • Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare.

ChatGPT Work

ChatGPT Work is OpenAI's agent for longer jobs. It can create or edit native Google Docs once the Google app is connected: you open Work, ask for the Doc, choose the account or file, and approve the action. It can also turn a Google Doc into a reusable template without changing the original.

Where Upsy fits

  • Suggestions, not overwrites. Upsy writes changes in Google's Suggesting mode. You and your collaborators accept or reject them in the Doc.
  • Comments. ChatGPT can comment on a specific passage.
  • What it may do, not just when it asks. On a personal account, ChatGPT's permission settings decide when it asks you; only a workspace admin can turn its Drive actions off. Upsy decides what it can do at all: Read-only, a few picked actions, or full access, which still can't edit a Doc directly unless you turn that on.
  • Nothing deleted. Upsy has no tool that shares, moves, trashes or deletes files. ChatGPT's own app can share, move and delete them.
  • Shared Drives. Upsy's search includes Docs in Shared Drives your account can open.
  • Several accounts. Up to five Google accounts, each with its own level.
  • History and alerts, shared with your other assistants.

What you need

  • ChatGPT on the web. You add a custom MCP server at chatgpt.com/plugins, not in the phone app.
  • In a work workspace, an admin who allows Create custom MCP servers for your role. On a personal plan, if the option is missing, check your plan.
  • A Google account that can open the Docs. A Google Workspace admin may block third-party apps.
  • A free Upsy account.

Connect Google Docs to ChatGPT through Upsy

  1. Sign up at upsy.ai.

  2. On the Apps page, click Connect an app and find Google Docs. It connects with Google Drive, so click Connect, then Continue on the page about Composio. Choose your Google account and allow access.

  3. Open Assistants, click Add assistant and pick ChatGPT.

  4. In ChatGPT on the web, open Plugins, click Add (+), then Create custom MCP server.

  5. Name it Upsy and paste:

    https://upsy.ai/connect

  6. Set authentication to OAuth, accept the warning and click Create as a plugin.

  7. Click Connect. On Upsy's page, sign in. Next to Google Drive, choose Read-only or leave All, then click Allow.

  8. If ChatGPT shows Install plugin, install it.

Want ChatGPT to overwrite text without suggestions? On ChatGPT's page in Upsy, choose Pick actions for Google Drive and tick Edit a Google Doc directly. Don't add Upsy from ChatGPT's plugin directory: that listing doesn't include the Google Drive tools. More in the custom MCP server guide.

Check that it works

Start a new chat and send:

@Upsy Find the Google Doc I changed most recently and summarize it in three bullets.

ChatGPT should name the Doc and link to it. Then ask "Suggest a clearer title for it." ChatGPT shows an approval card for docs_suggest before Upsy writes anything. Approve it, open the Doc, and you'll see the suggested title in color. Upsy's History lists both steps under ChatGPT.

What ChatGPT can do with Google Docs

Each Upsy tool tells ChatGPT whether it only reads. ChatGPT uses that to decide when to ask you.

Tool What it does Level ChatGPT asks first?
drive_search, drive_recent Find Docs by name or content, or the latest changed Read-only Not under Allow read actions
docs_read The Doc as Markdown: headings, lists, tables, every tab, and pending suggestions marked Read-only Not under Allow read actions
docs_suggest Replace or delete text, or add paragraphs at the end, as suggestions. Up to 50 changes at once Full access Yes, by default
docs_comment Comment on a passage Full access Yes, by default
drive_upload Save a new Google Doc from text, up to 3 MB, in a folder Full access Yes, by default
docs_edit The same changes, made directly. Version history keeps the old text Pick actions only Yes, by default

Upsy marks suggesting, commenting and editing as sensitive, because the change reaches everyone who shares the Doc.

What Upsy doesn't do: formatting, images, tables, new tabs, reading or resolving comments, accepting suggestions, or editing Word files stored in Drive (it can read them). For spreadsheets, see Google Sheets with ChatGPT.

Prompts to try

  • "@Upsy Read the onboarding guide in Google Docs and list anything that looks out of date. Don't change it."
  • "Suggest edits to 'Press release draft' so no sentence runs past 25 words."
  • "In 'Team handbook', suggest replacing '#general' with '#team' everywhere."
  • "Comment on the budget line in 'Board memo' asking whether it includes tax."
  • "Create a Google Doc called 'Designer interview questions' with ten questions, in my Hiring folder."
  • "Read 'Trip ideas' from my personal Google account and 'Offsite agenda' from my work account, and tell me if the dates clash."

Troubleshooting

"ChatGPT needs all requested permissions"

That's ChatGPT's own Google Drive app. Per OpenAI's troubleshooting page, select Try again, then Select all on Google's screen. To connect fewer Google apps, use Select fewer apps.

ChatGPT can open a Doc in Library but not update it

OpenAI lists three reasons: the update isn't supported in ChatGPT, the action is off in your workspace, or a Google permission is missing. Through Upsy, ChatGPT can suggest changes in any Google Doc your account can edit.

A Doc in a Shared Drive is missing

ChatGPT's Library doesn't include Shared Drives yet. Ask "@Upsy search Drive for …": Upsy's search covers Shared Drives.

ChatGPT uses its Google Drive app instead of Upsy

Type @Upsy at the start of the prompt. After setup, Upsy also gives you a Help ChatGPT remember message to paste, so later chats prefer Upsy.

ChatGPT has no Docs tools from Upsy

If you created the Upsy plugin before connecting Google Drive in Upsy, ChatGPT still has the old tool list. Open the plugin under Settings › Plugins, click Refresh, then start a new chat.

"… runs across a table cell, an image or a chip"

A Doc change can't span a table cell, an image or an @-mention. Ask ChatGPT to change each part on its own.

Disabled by admin

In a work workspace, an admin has turned the app off. Ask them to check it under Workspace settings › Apps.

Security and privacy

  • OpenAI treats custom MCP servers as elevated risk and doesn't review them. Add only servers you trust.
  • ChatGPT never gets your Google tokens. It calls Upsy, and Upsy calls Google. For now, Google's screen names Composio, whose verified Google app Upsy uses until Google finishes reviewing Upsy's own.
  • ChatGPT's approval card is your check. Upsy has no approval step of its own. Suggestions still wait in the Doc after you approve.
  • History shows each Doc ChatGPT read, suggested in, commented on or changed, and failed attempts with the reason.
  • Alerts email you if one assistant reads from your apps 100 or more times in 10 minutes. There's no alert for edits, so leave direct editing off unless you need it.
  • Turning it off: set Google Drive to No access on ChatGPT's page, click Remove ChatGPT, or disconnect Google Drive in Apps. See also is it safe to connect Gmail to ChatGPT?

FAQ

Can ChatGPT edit Google Docs?

Yes, on paid plans. ChatGPT's Google Drive app can update a Doc where supported, and ChatGPT Work creates and edits Docs. Through Upsy, ChatGPT suggests changes you accept, and edits directly only if you allow it.

Is there a Google Docs connector for ChatGPT?

Not on its own. Since March 2026, Docs actions are part of the Google Drive app.

Is there a Google Docs MCP server for ChatGPT?

Upsy is one. Add it as a custom MCP server and ChatGPT gets tools to read, suggest in, comment on and create Google Docs, with the access you choose.

Can ChatGPT comment on a Google Doc?

OpenAI's pages don't say its Google Drive app can. Through Upsy, ChatGPT comments on the passage you name.

Can ChatGPT delete my Google Docs?

ChatGPT's own Google Drive app can delete files where your workspace allows it, and it may ask first. Upsy has no tool that deletes, trashes, moves or shares files.
