How to connect Gmail to Meta Muse

Connect Gmail to Muse so it can search, read, draft and send your email, and decide which of those it may do. Muse's own connector and Upsy compared.

Updated

Short answer

Muse has its own Gmail connector: say "Connect my Gmail" in a chat, or tap Connect next to Gmail in Settings › Connectors, then sign in with Google. It takes a minute and works on the free plan. Use Upsy instead if you need more than one Gmail account, rules for single actions, or the same Gmail in Grok, ChatGPT and Claude.

The built-in way

Muse's Gmail connector was there at launch, and for many people it's enough. According to Meta's connector help and launch post:

  • You choose read or send. When you connect, you decide whether Muse can only read your mail or also send it.
  • It asks before sending. By default, Muse asks for your approval before it sends an email. You can change that in Settings › Permissions (Meta's approvals guide).
  • It searches per task. Muse fetches what a task needs and doesn't download your whole inbox unless you ask.
  • It hides sign-in codes. Meta's security post says the connector filters out one-time codes, password-reset links and magic login links, to protect your other accounts. It also means Muse can't finish a sign-up that emails you a code.

Where it stops:

  • One Google account. Muse's Gmail holds one account, and Meta describes no way to add a second. See how to connect multiple Gmail accounts to Muse.
  • No rules for single actions. Meta documents ask-first settings and read-only access, not a way to allow, say, drafts and archiving but never sending or trashing.
  • Muse only. The connection doesn't carry over to Grok, ChatGPT or Claude.
  • Disconnecting doesn't erase what Muse learned. Meta says data Muse already used may stay in its memories and chat history.

If you have one Gmail account, only use Muse, and are happy with its approvals, use the built-in connector.

Why use Upsy for Gmail

Upsy connects to Muse as one custom connector (a remote MCP server: a connector that lets the assistant use another app). For Gmail, it adds:

  • More accounts: up to five Gmail accounts, each with its own access.
  • Access you set per action: Read-only, or Pick actions, where you choose each action Muse may take. Upsy enforces it: a tool you didn't allow isn't listed to Muse and can't be called.
  • History and alerts: every search, read, draft and send is in your Upsy History, under Muse.
  • One setup for every assistant: Grok, ChatGPT and Claude can use the same Gmail through Upsy, each with its own access.
  • Your files in emails: Muse can attach files from Upsy, like your CV, or forward another email's attachment.

Meta doesn't review custom connectors, so pick one you trust and can audit. Every Upsy tool, and whether it reads or writes, is public at upsy.ai/docs.

What you need

  • A Muse account on any plan, in the US or Canada.
  • A free Upsy account at upsy.ai.
  • A Gmail or Google Workspace account. On a work account, your Google admin may need to allow the app first.

Connect Gmail to Muse

  1. In Upsy, open Apps, click Connect an app, then Connect on Gmail.
  2. Google's sign-in opens. Pick your account and approve. The consent screen may name Composio, not Upsy, and ask for full access to your mail (see Troubleshooting).
  3. If Muse isn't connected to Upsy yet, open Assistants, click Add assistant and pick Muse. Paste the prompt Upsy shows into a new Muse chat, open the sign-in link Muse gives you, and choose full access or read-only for Gmail. Click Allow. The full steps are in how to add a custom connector to Muse.
  4. If Muse was already connected, it gets Full access to Gmail right away. To change that, open Muse's page under Assistants.
  5. To choose single actions, click Pick actions… next to Gmail on Muse's page, and turn on only what Muse may do.
  6. Start a new chat in Muse, so it loads Upsy's Gmail tools.
  7. If you also connected Muse's own Gmail, tell Muse which to use. The memory line from setup tells it to prefer Upsy. Or disconnect the built-in one in Settings › Connectors.

Check that it works

Ask Muse:

Use Upsy to find the last email I got from my bank and summarize it.

Muse should search, open the email, and summarize it. Upsy's History shows the search, then "read an email", under Muse. Then try "Draft a reply, but don't send it" and look in Gmail's Drafts.

What Muse can do with Gmail

Through Upsy, Muse can:

  • Search with Gmail's own search operators, like from:alice newer_than:7d or in:sent.
  • Read one message, or a whole thread from oldest to newest, and open attachments up to 10 MB.
  • Draft new emails and replies that stay in the thread, with attachments from your Upsy files or from another email, up to 24 MB in all.
  • Send a new email, a reply, or a draft you saved.
  • Manage drafts: list, send and delete them.
  • Organize: archive, mark read or unread, star, mark important, move back to the inbox, and add or remove labels (new label names are created).
  • Trash and restore emails. Gmail deletes trashed mail for good after 30 days.
  • Save an attachment to Google Drive, into a folder you name, if Drive is connected too.
Access What Muse can do in Gmail
Full access Everything above
Read-only Search, read emails and threads, open attachments, list labels and drafts
Pick actions Only the actions you choose, like drafting and archiving but not sending
No access Nothing; Gmail's tools answer that you haven't allowed it

Prompts to try

  • "Using Upsy, list the emails from this week that still need a reply from me."
  • "Read the thread with my landlord about the lease and draft a reply saying I'll renew. Don't send it."
  • "Archive every unread newsletter from the past week and mark them read."
  • "Save the PDF from my accountant's latest email to my Taxes folder in Google Drive."
  • "Email my CV from my Upsy files to jobs@example.com with a short note."

Troubleshooting

Google's sign-in names Composio, not Upsy

While Google reviews Upsy's own Google app, Gmail signs in through Composio's verified Google app. The consent screen names Composio and asks for full mail access. Upsy only acts on your email when an assistant you allowed asks. This is temporary.

Google blocks the sign-in on a work account

Your Google Workspace admin restricts which third-party apps can reach company data. Ask them to allow it, as Google explains in its admin guide.

Muse uses its own Gmail instead of Upsy

Say "use Upsy" in your request, or save the memory line from setup. If you don't need both, disconnect Muse's built-in Gmail in Settings › Connectors.

Muse says you haven't allowed it to use Gmail

That message comes from Upsy. Open Muse's page under Assistants and set Gmail to Full access, Read-only or Pick actions. If Muse says Gmail isn't connected to Upsy, connect it on the Apps page, then start a new chat.

Gmail is connected, but Muse doesn't see it

Muse keeps the tool list it got when the chat started. Start a new chat.

Muse says Gmail needs reconnecting

Google's access ended, for example after a password change. Reconnect Gmail on Upsy's Apps page.

Security and privacy

  • Muse never gets your Google password or token. It calls Upsy's tools, and Upsy calls Gmail through Composio, which doesn't store the contents of those requests.
  • History keeps each action with short details: the search, the subject and recipients of a sent email. It doesn't keep the emails themselves.
  • Alerts email you when Muse sends 20 or more emails, trashes or deletes 50 or more items, or reads 100 or more emails within 10 minutes.
  • No approval step in Upsy. Muse's own Permissions settings decide when it asks before sending, and Meta doesn't say how they apply to custom connectors. For a hard stop, use Read-only, or Pick actions without sending.
  • Sign-in codes aren't filtered. Unlike Muse's built-in connector, Upsy passes emails as they are, codes included. Read-only still lets Muse read them.
  • To turn it off, flip Muse's switch on Upsy's Assistants page. Disconnecting Gmail in Upsy deletes its keys. You can also remove access in your Google Account.
