How to connect multiple Gmail accounts to ChatGPT

ChatGPT now connects more than one Gmail account. How to add a second inbox, and how to give each one its own access in ChatGPT and your other assistants.

Updated

Short answer

Yes. Since August 28, 2026, ChatGPT's Gmail plugin takes more than one Google account on Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise. Open Settings › Plugins › Gmail and choose Connect another account; each account takes about a minute. Use Upsy if you also want a hard limit per inbox (work read-only, personal can send), a record of what ChatGPT did in each one, or the same inboxes in Claude, Grok and Muse.

The built-in way

OpenAI added several accounts for Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Contacts on August 28, 2026, and extended it to other plugins on September 17 (release notes). To add a second inbox:

  1. In ChatGPT, open Settings, then Plugins, and select Gmail.
  2. Under Connected accounts, select Connect another account.
  3. Sign in to the other Google account. On Google's screen, approve every permission: if you skip one, ChatGPT says it needs all requested permissions and asks you to try again.
  4. In a chat, say which inbox you mean: "in my work Gmail".

Each connected account can have its own approval setting. Open the account's menu (•••) under Connected accounts, select Settings, and pick Always ask, Allow read actions, Allow low-risk actions or Allow all actions. OpenAI's account help page has the details.

Where the built-in way stops:

  • The settings decide when ChatGPT asks, not what it can do. Both inboxes keep the full Gmail access you approved at sign-in. On a personal ChatGPT account you can't make one inbox read-only; only workspace admins can switch off single actions.
  • Work accounts may need an admin. A Google Workspace admin may have to approve ChatGPT, and an Enterprise company can stop its work accounts being connected to personal ChatGPT accounts.
  • It's ChatGPT only. Claude and Muse still hold one Gmail account each, so you set up your inboxes again in every assistant.
  • Plan and region. The release covered Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise. If Gmail isn't offered to you at all, see Gmail with ChatGPT in the EU and UK.

If two inboxes in ChatGPT with an approval prompt is all you need, the built-in plugin is enough.

What you need for the Upsy way

  • A free Upsy account at upsy.ai.
  • ChatGPT on the web, to add Upsy as a custom MCP server (a connector that lets ChatGPT use another app). In a work ChatGPT workspace, your admin may need to allow custom MCP servers.
  • The password and second step for each Google account, since you sign in to each one.
  • For a Google Workspace account, permission from your Google admin to use outside apps.

Connect several Gmail accounts through Upsy

  1. Sign up at upsy.ai and open the Apps page.
  2. Click Connect an app, choose Gmail, and sign in with your first Google account. Google's consent screen may name Composio rather than Upsy (see Troubleshooting).
  3. When you come back, Upsy opens the access settings for the new account. A new account starts at Full access for every assistant, so set it now if you want less.
  4. On the Gmail row, click Add account and sign in with the next Google account. Repeat for up to five accounts.
  5. Open Assistants, click Add assistant and pick ChatGPT.
  6. In ChatGPT on the web, open Plugins, click Add (+), then Create custom MCP server. Name it Upsy, paste https://upsy.ai/connect, set authentication to OAuth, accept the warning and click Create as a plugin.
  7. Click Connect. On the Upsy page that opens, choose what ChatGPT can do in each Gmail account and click Allow.

The custom MCP server guide covers the ChatGPT side in detail. Don't install Upsy from ChatGPT's plugin directory: that listing has no Gmail tools.

Check that it works

Start a new chat and send:

@Upsy Which Gmail accounts can you use, and what can you do in each?

ChatGPT should list every address with its access, for example "work@company.com: Read-only" and "me@gmail.com: Full access". Then try:

@Upsy Show me the three newest unread emails in each of my Gmail accounts.

You should see two separate lists, and Upsy's History shows each search under ChatGPT.

Choose what ChatGPT can do in each account

Every Gmail account in Upsy is connected and granted on its own. On ChatGPT's page in Upsy, each one gets:

Level What ChatGPT can do
Full access Everything below
Read-only Search, read messages, threads and attachments, list labels and drafts. Nothing that changes your mail.
Pick actions Only the tools you tick, such as drafting but not sending
No access ChatGPT can't use the account

A setup many people like: work inbox Read-only, personal inbox Full access, and a shared family inbox on Pick actions with drafts only.

With full access, ChatGPT can:

  • search with Gmail's own syntax (from:alice newer_than:7d) and read whole threads and attachments
  • write drafts, send new emails and replies in the same thread, and send drafts
  • archive, mark read or unread, star, label, trash and restore
  • copy an attachment straight into Google Drive, if Drive is connected

Each Gmail tool takes an account, so ChatGPT works in one inbox at a time and searches two inboxes as two searches. If ChatGPT doesn't name one, Upsy uses the first account you connected.

Prompts to try

  • "Search both my Gmail accounts for the lease renewal from this spring and tell me which inbox it's in."
  • "List today's unread emails in my work Gmail, newest first, with one line each."
  • "Draft a reply from my personal Gmail to Sam's last email saying Friday works. Don't send it."
  • "Archive last week's newsletters in my personal inbox and leave everything else."
  • "Save the PDF from my accountant's latest email to Google Drive."
  • "Compare what my two inboxes got from my bank this month."

Troubleshooting

ChatGPT uses the wrong inbox

Name the address or say "work" or "personal" in your request. When no account is given, Upsy uses the first one you connected, so connect your main inbox first.

ChatGPT answers from its own Gmail plugin, not Upsy

If both are connected, ChatGPT picks one. Mention @Upsy, or paste the short "Help ChatGPT remember" message Upsy shows after setup, so ChatGPT prefers Upsy in new chats. You can also disconnect the built-in Gmail plugin.

I only see some of Upsy's tools

You installed Upsy from ChatGPT's plugin directory. Its tool list was fixed when it was submitted and has no Gmail tools, and reinstalling doesn't change that. Remove it and add Upsy as a custom MCP server.

The new account doesn't show up in ChatGPT

Check its level on ChatGPT's page in Upsy isn't No access. Then start a new chat: ChatGPT keeps the tool list it had when a chat began. Clicking Refresh on the Upsy plugin in ChatGPT's settings also helps.

You may see Composio on Google's screen

While Google reviews Upsy's own Google app, Gmail signs in through Composio's verified Google app. Google's screen names Composio and asks for full mail access. Upsy only acts on your mail when an assistant you allowed asks it to. This is temporary.

Google says your administrator blocked the app

Your Google Workspace admin restricts outside apps. Ask them to allow it, or connect a personal Gmail account instead.

Security and privacy

ChatGPT never sees your Google passwords or tokens. It calls Upsy's tools, and Upsy calls Gmail. Every action is in Upsy's History under ChatGPT, and the history can't be edited. Upsy emails you when one assistant deletes or trashes 50 or more items, sends 20 or more emails, or reads from your apps 100 or more times in 10 minutes, and when a new assistant or app connects. Upsy has no approval prompt of its own: ChatGPT's own prompt is what asks before a send. One click on ChatGPT's page in Upsy turns it off. Upsy is free for personal use, with no ads, and doesn't sell your data. For the wider picture, read is it safe to connect Gmail to ChatGPT?

FAQ

Can ChatGPT connect to multiple Gmail accounts?

Yes. Since August 28, 2026, you can connect more than one Gmail account on Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise, under Settings › Plugins › Gmail › Connect another account.

How do I tell ChatGPT which Gmail account to use?

Name it in your request, by address or as "work" or "personal". OpenAI's help says to specify the account when a plugin has several.

Can I make one Gmail account read-only in ChatGPT?

Not with the built-in plugin: its settings only change when ChatGPT asks for approval. With Upsy, set that account to Read-only and ChatGPT can't call anything that changes it.

How many Gmail accounts can I connect?

OpenAI doesn't publish a limit. Upsy takes up to five Gmail accounts, each granted on its own.

Can ChatGPT search all my inboxes at once?

It searches them one after another and combines the answer. Ask for "both" or "all my Gmail accounts" in the prompt.
