How to connect Outlook to Grok

Grok's Outlook connector needs a work or school account. How to let Grok read and send from a personal Outlook.com or Hotmail inbox instead.

Updated

Short answer

With a work or school Microsoft account, use Grok's built-in Outlook connector: open grok.com/connectors, click New Connector, pick Outlook and sign in. It reads, drafts and sends, though some companies need an admin to approve it first. With a personal Outlook.com, Hotmail or Live account, Grok's connector isn't an option. Instead, sign in to Outlook on the web in Upsy's cloud browser, and Grok reads and sends there, in its own tab. Setup takes about ten minutes.

The built-in way

Grok's Outlook docs describe two connectors, each with its own sign-in:

  • Outlook Mail searches your mailbox, reads messages and attachments, writes drafts (To, Cc, Bcc, HTML), sends, replies to all, forwards, moves mail between folders and attaches files Grok made to a draft.
  • Outlook Calendar searches and reads events, checks availability across several attendees, creates and updates events with recurrence and reminders, and answers invitations.

Unlike Gmail, Outlook can send from the start: Grok asks for Microsoft's Mail.ReadWrite and Mail.Send permissions when you sign in.

The limits are about accounts:

  • Work or school accounts only. The setup step reads "Sign in with your Microsoft work or school account". Personal Microsoft accounts aren't covered. Microsoft explains the difference between the two.
  • Admin approval. Some companies require an administrator to approve the app. If you see a "need admin approval" error, your IT admin grants consent to the xAI Grok app in the Azure AD admin portal, under Enterprise applications.
  • Grok Business and Enterprise. A team admin has to add the connector in the xAI console before members can connect (connector management).

There's also the Grok for Outlook add-in, launched July 21, 2026 for paid X and SuperGrok users. It runs beside your inbox inside Outlook, summarizes threads and drafts replies, and "Nothing sends until you hit send." xAI calls it a Microsoft 365 add-in and doesn't say whether it works with personal accounts. It works inside Outlook, not in your Grok chats.

Grok Bot got Outlook, Outlook Calendar and OneDrive plugins on September 2, 2026. In the same Cursor forum thread, people on work accounts reported approval loops, and others were locked out after several Bots signed in to one Microsoft account through Grok Bot's shared browser.

If you have a work account and your company allows Grok, the built-in connector is the better choice. It reaches Outlook directly, which is faster and more reliable than a browser.

What you need

  • A Grok account. Connectors are open to every Grok user. On Grok Business or Enterprise, a team admin has to add Upsy as a custom connector in the xAI console first.
  • A Microsoft account you can sign in to on the web, such as Outlook.com, Hotmail or Live.
  • A free Upsy account.

How Upsy handles Outlook today

Upsy doesn't reach Outlook through Microsoft's API yet. Its Outlook connector shows Pending on the Apps page: it's waiting for Microsoft to approve Upsy, and you can't connect it until then. When it comes, it will send email only.

Today, Outlook works through Upsy's cloud browser, your own browser in the cloud that stays signed in to your sites:

Task Today How
Read and search your inbox Yes Grok opens Outlook on the web in its own tab
Reply, forward and send new emails Yes The same tab, with Outlook's own buttons
Move, flag or archive mail Yes The same tab
Outlook's calendar Yes The browser opens it like any other page
A direct Outlook connector Not yet Once Microsoft approves Upsy

Grok works in the page the way a person would: it reads what's on screen, clicks and types. That's slower than a connector, but it reaches everything Outlook on the web shows you.

Connect Outlook to Grok

  1. Go to upsy.ai, click Set up Upsy and create your account.
  2. Open Upsy's Browser page. Open Outlook from the bookmarks and sign in with your Microsoft account in the live view. Complete any check Microsoft asks for. The login stays saved for next time.
  3. On the Assistants page, click Add assistant and choose Grok under Which assistant?. Click Copy prompt.
  4. Paste it into a Grok chat, approve the card Grok shows, and open the sign-in link.
  5. On the Upsy page, sign in. Keep Browser ticked: that's what reaches Outlook. Untick anything Grok shouldn't use, and click Allow.

To add Upsy by hand instead: on grok.com, open Connectors, click New Connector, then Custom, and paste:

https://upsy.ai/connect

In Grok Bot, paste the prompt into a Bot chat, then type @ and pick Upsy.

Check that it works

Ask Grok:

Open my Outlook inbox in the Upsy browser and list my five newest emails.

Grok opens Outlook in its own tab and reads the page. Watch it on Upsy's Browser page as it works. Each step shows up in Upsy's History under Grok.

Then try sending:

In the Upsy browser, write an email from my Outlook to my other address with the subject "Upsy test". Show it to me before you click Send.

Grok fills in the email in Outlook and should stop for your go-ahead. Once it sends, a copy lands in Sent Items.

What Grok can do with Outlook

Through the cloud browser, Grok can open pages, read them, take a screenshot when the layout matters, click, type, pick from menus, press keys, scroll, and open or close its own tabs. In Outlook on the web, that means it can:

  • search your mailbox and open messages
  • reply, reply all, forward and write new emails
  • move, flag and archive mail
  • open your Outlook calendar

Each assistant works in its own labelled tabs. Click anywhere in the live view to take over, for example to answer a sign-in check.

The browser has one switch per assistant, on or off. There's no Read-only setting for it, so Browser gives Grok the same reach you have in every site you're signed in to there. If Grok should read but never send, say so in your request, and check History afterwards.

Prompts to try

  • "Open my Outlook in the browser and tell me if anything from my bank came this week."
  • "Search my Outlook for the parking permit email and summarize it."
  • "Draft a reply to the newest email from Dana in Outlook. Don't send it; show me first."
  • "Forward the flight confirmation in my Outlook to my partner at sam@example.com."
  • "Move every newsletter in my Outlook inbox from this month to the Archive folder."

Troubleshooting

Grok's Outlook connector says it needs a work or school account

That's Grok's built-in connector, and it doesn't take personal accounts. Sign in to Outlook in Upsy's Browser instead.

"Need admin approval" when connecting Grok's Outlook

Your company requires an admin to approve the app. Ask IT to grant consent to the xAI Grok app under Enterprise applications, or use your personal account in Upsy's Browser.

Upsy's Outlook connector says Pending

That's expected. Upsy is waiting for Microsoft's approval, so the connector can't be connected yet. You don't need it: the Browser route covers reading and sending.

Microsoft asks you to verify the sign-in

To Microsoft, the cloud browser is a new device. Take over in the live view and complete the check. Signing in to one account from many places at once can trigger lockouts, as Grok Bot users found.

Grok sees a Microsoft sign-in page instead of your inbox

Your Outlook session ended. Sign in again on Upsy's Browser page, then ask Grok to try again.

Grok says it can't use the browser

Browser is off for Grok. Turn it on from Grok's page in Assistants.

Security and privacy

  • Grok never gets your Microsoft password. The login belongs to your cloud browser, not to Grok, and Grok works in it through Upsy's tools.
  • The Browser switch is broad. It gives Grok full control of your cloud browser and every site you're signed in to there, not only Outlook. Turn it on only for assistants you trust.
  • Sending in the browser has no send card. Grok clicks Outlook's own Send button, and Upsy doesn't ask before each action. Ask Grok to show you each email before it sends.
  • History lists each browser action Grok takes, like opening a page or clicking, with the page's address.
  • Alerts email you when a new assistant connects or a new app is connected.
  • Turning it off: switch Browser off for Grok, or click Remove Grok in Assistants. Removing it also closes its open browser session.
