How to connect a personal Outlook account to ChatGPT

ChatGPT's Outlook connector only takes work and school accounts. How to let ChatGPT read and send from a personal Outlook.com or Hotmail account.

Updated

Short answer

ChatGPT's Outlook Email plugin takes Microsoft 365 work and school accounts only, so a personal Outlook.com, Hotmail or Live address is turned away. The way around it today: sign in to outlook.com once in Upsy's cloud browser, add Upsy to ChatGPT, and ChatGPT reads and sends your mail there, in its own tab. Setup takes about ten minutes. Upsy can't yet read Outlook mail through Microsoft's own API.

The built-in way

ChatGPT has two Microsoft plugins for this: Outlook Email and Outlook Calendar. With a work or school account they can:

  • search and read your mail, including shared mailboxes you have access to
  • look up people and manage Outlook contacts
  • read your calendar and availability
  • draft an email and send it from the chat, on Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise on the web (added June 8, 2026)

Some actions need your company's Microsoft admin to approve ChatGPT first, and a ChatGPT workspace admin to turn the actions on. OpenAI lists what each plugin does in Outlook Email and Calendar apps in ChatGPT.

Personal accounts are the gap. People who try an Outlook.com or Hotmail address are told only business or education accounts work, and an answer on Microsoft Q&A says there's no way around it inside ChatGPT. Users were still reporting it in April 2026. If your mail is on a work or school account, use the built-in plugin.

What Upsy can and can't do with Outlook

The way to use Outlook with Upsy today is the cloud browser: your own browser in the cloud, signed in to your sites. You sign in to outlook.com there once, and ChatGPT opens Outlook in its own tab, reads the page as text, and clicks and types. Anything you can do in Outlook on the web, it can try: read, search, reply, forward, file and send. It's slower than an API, and you can watch it work and take over at any time.

Cloud browser (today) Outlook connector (coming)
How ChatGPT uses outlook.com, like a person Microsoft's own API
Reads your inbox Yes No
Sends Yes, with Outlook's Send button New emails only
Accounts Any, including personal Personal, work and school
Status Works now Pending until Microsoft approves Upsy

Upsy's Outlook connector comes once Microsoft approves Upsy. It's for sending only: new emails from your address, with cc and bcc, saved to Sent Items. It won't read mail, reply inside a thread or see your calendar. Nobody can connect it yet: on Upsy's Apps page it shows Pending, and its dialog sends you to the Browser instead.

What you need

  • A free Upsy account at upsy.ai.
  • ChatGPT on the web, to add Upsy as a custom MCP server (a connector that lets ChatGPT use another app).
  • Your Microsoft password and your second sign-in step, such as the Authenticator app or a code sent to you.

Connect your Outlook.com account

  1. Sign up at upsy.ai.
  2. Open Browser in Upsy and click the Outlook bookmark, or go to outlook.com.
  3. Sign in with your personal Microsoft account and finish Microsoft's verification. If Microsoft asks whether to stay signed in, choose Yes. The sign-in stays in your cloud browser.
  4. Open Assistants, click Add assistant and pick ChatGPT.
  5. In ChatGPT on the web, open Plugins, click Add (+), then Create custom MCP server.
  6. Name it Upsy, paste https://upsy.ai/connect, set authentication to OAuth, accept the warning and click Create as a plugin.
  7. Click Connect. On the Upsy page that opens, make sure the Browser is allowed, then click Allow.

Add Upsy this way rather than from ChatGPT's plugin directory. The custom MCP server guide has more on the ChatGPT side.

Check that it works

Start a new chat and send:

@Upsy Open Outlook in my Upsy browser and list the five newest emails in my inbox, with sender and subject.

ChatGPT may ask you to approve opening the page, then lists the emails. In Upsy's Browser, you'll see the tab ChatGPT opened, with your inbox in it.

What ChatGPT can do with Outlook through Upsy

Through the browser, ChatGPT can:

  • read the inbox, open emails and use Outlook's search box
  • write new emails, replies and forwards, and click Send
  • move, flag, archive or delete messages
  • open your calendar in Outlook on the web the same way

The browser has one access level for every site: Full access lets ChatGPT click and type, and Read-only only lets it read and scroll a page that's already open. To keep ChatGPT out of the browser, set it to No access. Every step it takes is in Upsy's History.

Prompts to try

  • "In my Upsy browser, open Outlook and summarize the unread emails from today."
  • "Find the email from my landlord about the deposit in Outlook and tell me what it says."
  • "Reply in Outlook to Jamie's last email: Thursday at 6 works. Show me the reply before you send it."
  • "Write a new Outlook email to mum@example.com with the subject Flights and a short note that I land at 9pm. Send it."
  • "Move every email from the newsletter senders in my Outlook inbox to the Newsletters folder."
  • "Check my Outlook calendar for anything on Saturday."

Troubleshooting

Upsy's Apps page says Outlook is Pending

That's Upsy's Outlook connector. Nobody can connect it until Microsoft approves Upsy. You don't need it: sign in to outlook.com in Upsy's Browser, and ChatGPT reads and sends there.

Microsoft asks you to verify, or blocks the sign-in

Upsy's cloud browser runs in a US data center, so Microsoft sees a sign-in from a new device and place. Approve it in the Authenticator app or enter the code Microsoft sends. If Microsoft locks the account, unlock it from your own phone or computer first, then sign in again in Upsy's Browser.

ChatGPT asks for approval at every click

ChatGPT treats clicks and typing as write actions and confirms them by default. When it asks, you can let ChatGPT remember your approval for that tool for the rest of the chat. To change the default, go to Settings › Plugins › Permissions in ChatGPT.

ChatGPT tries its own Outlook plugin

Say "in my Upsy browser" and mention @Upsy. If ChatGPT's own Outlook plugin is connected with a work account, it may pick that one.

I only see some of Upsy's tools

You installed Upsy from ChatGPT's plugin directory. That listing's tools were fixed when it was submitted, and reinstalling doesn't update them. Remove it and add Upsy as a custom MCP server.

ChatGPT gets lost on the page

Outlook's pages are busy. Ask ChatGPT to take a screenshot of its tab, or open Upsy's Browser, click where it's stuck, and tell it to carry on.

Security and privacy

You type your Microsoft password into the cloud browser yourself, and ChatGPT never sees it. The browser keeps you signed in, so ChatGPT can use Outlook whenever it has access. Each assistant works in its own tabs, and you can watch live and take over.

Every step is in Upsy's History under ChatGPT. Upsy's alerts count sends and deletes made through its email tools, not clicks in the browser, so check History if you let ChatGPT work in Outlook on its own. Upsy has no approval prompt of its own: ChatGPT's prompt is what asks before a click. To stop it, turn ChatGPT off on its page in Upsy, or sign out of outlook.com in the cloud browser. The same browser sign-in also works for Claude with a personal Outlook account.
