Can Grok send emails?
What Grok can do with your email on its own, why sending may be turned off, and how to let Grok send from Gmail or Outlook, with or without asking you first.

Short answer
Sometimes. Grok's built-in Gmail connector starts read-only, and its sending is "enabled progressively by your organization's administrators", so for many people Grok drafts an email but won't send it. Grok's Outlook connector can send, but only from a work or school account. Through Upsy, Grok can send from Gmail, including saved drafts, and shows you each email in a card before it goes. For a personal Outlook account, Grok sends from Outlook on the web in Upsy's cloud browser.
What Grok can do with email on its own
| Where | Reads | Drafts | Sends | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Grok on grok.com, Gmail connector | Yes | When write tools are on | When send tools are on | Starts read-only |
| Grok on grok.com, Outlook connector | Yes | Yes | Yes | Work or school account only; some companies need an admin to approve it |
| Grok Bot, Gmail plugin | Yes | Yes | Yes | One mailbox at a time |
| Grok for Outlook add-in | Inside Outlook | Yes | You click send | Paid X and SuperGrok users |
The Gmail row is where most people get stuck. Grok's Gmail docs list the Google permissions in tiers: gmail.readonly always, gmail.modify for drafts "when write tools are enabled", and gmail.send "when send tools are enabled". The docs don't describe a switch you can flip yourself.
Grok's Outlook connector asks for Mail.Send when you sign in, so it can send right away, but its sign-in is for "your Microsoft work or school account".
The Grok for Outlook add-in drafts replies inside Outlook, and "Nothing sends until you hit send."
Why Grok won't send email
Its Gmail connector is still read-only
This is the usual reason. Grok can search, read and often draft, but sending isn't on for your connection. The docs say your organization's administrators turn it on, and they don't describe a way to do it yourself on a personal Gmail account. Using Upsy for Gmail gets around it, since Upsy has its own send tool.
You use a personal Outlook account
Grok's Outlook connector doesn't cover Outlook.com, Hotmail or Live. Upsy's cloud browser does: see connect Outlook to Grok.
Your company hasn't approved Grok
With a work Microsoft account, you may see a "need admin approval" error. Your IT admin has to grant consent to the xAI Grok app. On Grok Business and Enterprise, a team admin also has to add the connector in the xAI console first.
Upsy doesn't allow it
If Grok goes through Upsy and says it isn't allowed to send, Gmail is set to Read-only for Grok, or you chose Pick actions without the send tool. For Outlook, Browser may be off for Grok. Change it on Grok's page in Assistants.
Grok used another connector
With Grok's own Gmail and Upsy both connected, Grok may try the read-only one. Ask it to send "with Upsy".
When Grok failed to send an email
- Check your Sent folder before trying again. A send that looks like it failed may still have gone out, and retrying could send it twice.
- If Upsy says the account needs reconnecting, its sign-in expired. Reconnect it on Upsy's Apps page.
- Attachments too large: one Gmail email through Upsy carries up to 24 MB of files in all. Share bigger files as a link.
- Wrong sender: with several Gmail accounts, Upsy sends from the first one unless Grok names another. Tell Grok which address to use.
How to let Grok send from Gmail with Upsy
- Sign up free at upsy.ai and connect Gmail on the Apps page. Google's screen may name Composio for now; that's expected while Google reviews Upsy's own Google app.
- On the Assistants page, click Add assistant, choose Grok, and paste the prompt Upsy shows into a Grok chat. Or add
https://upsy.ai/connectby hand under Connectors, New Connector, Custom. - Sign in on the Upsy page that opens. Leave Gmail at full access, and click Allow.
Grok then has two ways to send:
- Send now (
send_message): a new email, a reply that stays in its thread, or a draft you already saved. Files from your Upsy files or from another email can go along. - Draft first (
create_draft): the email waits in your Gmail Drafts. Send it yourself from Gmail, or tell Grok "send that draft", and it sends it as it is.

How to let Grok send from Outlook with Upsy
Today this goes through Upsy's cloud browser, your own browser in the cloud that stays signed in to your sites:
- Open Upsy's Browser page, open Outlook from the bookmarks, and sign in with your Microsoft account in the live view.
- Add Upsy to Grok as above, and keep Browser ticked on the sign-in page.
- Ask Grok to write the email "in the Upsy browser". It opens Outlook on the web in its own tab, fills in the email, and clicks Outlook's own Send button. It can reply inside a thread and forward too, since it uses Outlook the way you would.
Upsy's direct Outlook connector, for sending only, shows Pending on the Apps page. It comes once Microsoft approves Upsy, and can't be connected before then.
Asking you first, or not
- On grok.com, when Grok sends through a connector, such as Upsy's Gmail, it shows the email in a send card first, so you can check the recipient, subject and text.
- In Grok Bot, you can ask a Bot to draft messages for you to approve before sending. When a Bot needs approval, it shows the action with Allow once, Always allow and Deny. Under Settings, General, Auto-review, you can add rules such as "Ask first before sending any external email" (Grok Bot approvals). Choosing Always allow lets it skip asking next time.
- Upsy has no approval prompt of its own. It applies the access you set. To make sure Grok never sends from Gmail, set Gmail to Read-only, or under Pick actions turn on Create a Gmail draft and leave Send a Gmail message off. Then you send every email yourself.
- In the cloud browser, there's no send card: Grok clicks Send in Outlook itself. Ask it to show you the email first, or keep Browser off for Grok.
Every Gmail send is in Upsy's History under Grok, with details like the subject, and every browser action is there too. If one assistant sends 20 or more Gmail emails in 10 minutes, Upsy emails you an alert.
Can Grok send me emails?
Yes, a few ways:
- Ask Grok to send a summary or a reminder to your own address through Gmail or Outlook, with Grok's connector or with Upsy.
- Grok Bot started giving each Bot its own email inbox on October 9, 2026 (TeslaNorth). A Bot can use that address to email you.
FAQ
Can Grok send emails?
Yes, when sending is on. Grok's Gmail connector starts read-only, its Outlook connector sends from work or school accounts, and Upsy lets Grok send from Gmail and, in its cloud browser, from personal Outlook.
Does Grok send emails without asking?
On grok.com, Grok shows a send card first. In Grok Bot, ask for a draft to approve, or add an Ask first rule in Auto-review. Upsy doesn't ask on its own, so set Gmail to Read-only or drafts-only if you want to send everything yourself.
Why won't Grok send my email?
Usually because its Gmail connector is still read-only. Other reasons are a personal Outlook account, a company that hasn't approved Grok, or Upsy access set to Read-only.
Can Grok reply to an email in the same thread?
From Gmail through Upsy, yes: the reply stays in its thread. In Outlook, Grok replies in Upsy's cloud browser with Outlook's own Reply button.
Can Grok send email from Outlook.com or Hotmail?
Not with Grok's own connector. Through Upsy, yes: Grok sends from Outlook on the web in the cloud browser. A direct Outlook connector comes once Microsoft approves Upsy.
Is it safe to let Grok send email?
Start with drafts only, and watch Upsy's History. Mass-send alerts tell you if an assistant sends a lot at once, and one click on Grok's page in Assistants removes its access.
