How to connect ClickUp to Grok
Connect ClickUp to Grok so it can read and update your tasks, docs and lists, through one connector you control and with no API key to paste.
Updated
Short answer
Grok doesn't connect to ClickUp on its own. Connect ClickUp to Upsy with your ClickUp login, choose your Workspace, then add Upsy to Grok as a custom connector. Setup takes about five minutes on any ClickUp plan. Watch the daily limits: ClickUp's Free Forever plan allows 100 AI tool calls a day.
The built-in way
Grok's connector docs list its built-in connectors (Gmail and Google Calendar, Google Drive, OneDrive, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint and Salesforce). They also list a catalog of Box, Canva, Gamma, GitHub, Linear, Meltwater, Notion, S&P Global and Vercel. ClickUp isn't in either.
ClickUp runs its own MCP server, a connector that lets an assistant use another app. It only accepts sign-ins from apps it trusts. ClickUp's own blog describes "an allowlist of vetted MCP clients" that names Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and others, but not Grok. Pasting ClickUp's address straight into Grok may fail at sign-in. Upsy connects to ClickUp's server itself, and Grok talks to Upsy. You also get:
- Access levels per assistant, from read-only to every action.
- A History of each task Grok created or changed.
- The same ClickUp connection in Grok Bot, Muse, ChatGPT and Claude.
- Your inbox, calendar and other apps in the same chat.
What you need
- A ClickUp account on any plan. ClickUp says its MCP server works on all of them. The server works with your own ClickUp permissions. Guests and limited members may not have the API permission it relies on, and on Business Plus and Enterprise an admin can turn that permission off.
- A Grok account on grok.com. Grok's docs say connectors are available to all Grok users. On Grok Business or Enterprise, a team admin adds connectors first.
- A free Upsy account.
ClickUp caps how many tool calls an AI client can make in a rolling 24 hours, unless you have the Everything AI add-on:
| ClickUp plan | Tool calls per 24 hours |
|---|---|
| Free Forever | 100 |
| Unlimited | 300 |
| Business | 1,000 |
| Business Plus | 2,500 |
| Enterprise | 5,000 |
ClickUp counts these per Workspace and per client. Each tool call counts as one.
Set it up
- Sign up at upsy.ai with Set up Upsy. It's free.
- On Upsy's Apps page, find ClickUp and click Connect. Sign in to ClickUp and pick the Workspace or Workspaces Grok should reach. To change the Workspaces later, connect again.
- On the Assistants page, click Add assistant, then choose Grok under Which assistant? Upsy shows a setup prompt and the address
https://upsy.ai/connect. - In Grok, do one of these:
- Paste the setup prompt into a chat, approve the card Grok shows, and open the sign-in link.
- On grok.com, open Connectors, click New Connector, then Custom, paste the address and sign in. See the custom connector guide for each screen.
- Upsy opens a page saying Grok wants to access your Upsy. Sign in, choose ClickUp's level for Grok, and click Allow.
- Copy the Help Grok remember message and paste it into Grok, so it uses ClickUp in new chats without you naming Upsy.
If Grok already uses Upsy, you only need step 2. ClickUp then starts at Full access for every assistant, which you can change on ClickUp's page in Upsy.
For Grok Bot, paste the setup prompt into a Bot chat, then type @ and pick Upsy when you give it a task.
Check that it works
Ask Grok: "Using Upsy, show me my ClickUp Workspace's Spaces and Folders, then list the tasks assigned to me that are due this week."
Grok should describe your Workspace's structure, then list your tasks with their status and due date. If it says ClickUp isn't connected or has expired, see Troubleshooting.
What Grok can do with ClickUp
ClickUp's tool list covers tasks, time, Docs and Chat.
Reading:
- Search the Workspace, or tasks by type or tag.
- Get a task with its comments and threaded replies.
- See the Workspace hierarchy, Lists, Folders and members, and find people by name.
- Read time entries, the running timer, and how long tasks sat in each status.
- Read Chat channels and Doc pages.
Changing:
- Create and update tasks, one at a time or in bulk, and set custom fields.
- Comment on tasks, add or remove tags, links and dependencies, and attach files.
- Move a task to another List or add it to a second one.
- Start or stop the timer, and log time.
- Create and update Lists and Folders.
- Create Docs and pages, and edit pages.
- Send a message in a Chat channel.
ClickUp's pages disagree on deleting. One lists a Delete Task tool. Its FAQ says it left out delete tools for safety. Both agree there's no way to delete Lists, Folders, Docs or comments.
Pick a level for ClickUp, per assistant:
- Read-only: only tools ClickUp marks as read-only, such as search, reading tasks and time reports. Grok can't change anything.
- Pick actions: only the tools you tick. For example, create and update tasks and comment, but no Chat messages and no deleting. Tools ClickUp adds later stay off until you tick them.
- Full access: every ClickUp tool.
- No access: Grok can't reach ClickUp.
Prompts to try
- "What's blocked in the Website Redesign List? For each blocked task, tell me what it's waiting on."
- "Turn these meeting notes into ClickUp tasks in the Q4 Launch List, assigned to the people named, due Friday."
- "How much time did I log in ClickUp this week, by task?"
- "Which tasks in the Support List have sat in 'In review' for more than three days?"
- "Write a short project brief as a ClickUp Doc in the Marketing Space, based on the tasks in the Campaign List."
- "Start a timer on 'Draft newsletter' and remind me what else is due today."
Troubleshooting
Grok says ClickUp access expired
ClickUp's sign-in doesn't give Upsy a way to renew access. The connection works until ClickUp's access runs out, then ClickUp shows Reconnect on Upsy's Apps page and Grok is told to ask you to reconnect. Click Reconnect and sign in again. Each assistant's level stays as it was.
Calls stop with a rate-limit error
ClickUp returns RATE_LIMIT_EXCEEDED when you reach your plan's daily allowance. ClickUp says limits can't be reset early, so wait for the 24-hour window to roll over. On Free Forever, that's 100 calls. One big question can use several, so ask for one List at a time.
ClickUp connects but Grok finds nothing
ClickUp's blog says missing tools usually mean the sign-in didn't finish. Reconnect ClickUp in Upsy and make sure you pick a Workspace before you approve. If you belong to several Workspaces, check that the one you need was selected.
Grok can't see a Space or task you can see
The server follows your ClickUp permissions. If you're a guest or limited member, ask a Workspace admin about API access. That's also the fix if an admin on Business Plus or Enterprise has turned it off.
Grok says it isn't allowed to change a task
That's your Upsy level. Switch ClickUp to Pick actions and tick the tool, or to Full access. Refused attempts show in History. Other connector problems are in Grok connectors not working.
Security and privacy
- Grok never holds your ClickUp sign-in. Upsy keeps it and calls ClickUp's server for Grok.
- ClickUp's own permissions still apply. Grok can't see Spaces you can't.
- History in Upsy lists every ClickUp call Grok made, under its name.
- Alerts: Upsy emails you if one assistant deletes 50+ items, sends 20+ messages or reads 100+ items within 10 minutes. App tools that delete or send count toward these. You're also told when a new assistant or app connects.
- Turning it off: set ClickUp to No access for Grok, turn Grok off with one click, or disconnect ClickUp in Upsy.
- Upsy is made by Upstash, free for personal use, ad-free, and it doesn't sell data.
FAQ
Does Grok have a ClickUp integration?
Not a built-in one. Grok's docs list no ClickUp connector, and ClickUp's server only takes sign-ins from clients it has approved. Upsy connects to ClickUp, and you add Upsy to Grok.
Is ClickUp MCP free to use with Grok?
Yes, on every ClickUp plan, but the free plan caps AI tool calls at 100 per 24 hours. Upsy is free for personal use.
Can Grok create ClickUp tasks?
Yes, at Full access, or with Pick actions if you tick the create tool. It can also update tasks in bulk, set custom fields and log time.
Can Grok delete things in ClickUp?
At most a task. ClickUp's docs disagree on whether even that's available, and Lists, Folders, Docs and comments can't be deleted at all. Read-only or Pick actions can rule out deletes either way.
Can Grok post in ClickUp Chat?
Yes, if you allow ClickUp's send-message tool. It posts as you, so leave it out with Pick actions if you'd rather Grok only reads Chat.
