How to connect Airtable to Grok

Let Grok read and update records in your Airtable bases. Connect Airtable once and choose whether Grok may change records or only read them.

Updated

Short answer

Grok can't open your Airtable bases by itself. Connect Airtable to Upsy, pick the bases Grok may see, and add Upsy to Grok as a custom connector. It takes about five minutes and works on every Airtable plan. Grok can then search and summarize records, add and update them, and even build tables. Set it to Read-only if you only want answers.

The built-in way

Grok's connector docs list its built-in connectors (Gmail and Google Calendar, Google Drive, OneDrive, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint and Salesforce) and a catalog of Box, Canva, Gamma, GitHub, Linear, Meltwater, Notion, S&P Global and Vercel. Airtable isn't one of them.

Airtable has its own MCP server, a connector that lets an assistant use another app. It's included with every Airtable plan at no extra cost. You could add it to Grok as a custom connector yourself. Through Upsy you also get:

  • Access levels. Airtable's server can delete tables and create whole bases. Upsy lets Grok read only, or edit records without touching the structure.
  • A History of every record Grok read, added or changed.
  • Other apps alongside, so Grok can log an email lead in your CRM base or put a meeting on your calendar.
  • One connection for Grok, Grok Bot, Muse, ChatGPT and Claude.

What you need

  • An Airtable account on any plan. What Grok can do follows your role in each base:

Your role in the base What Grok can do there
Owner or Creator Read and change records, tables and fields
    Editor Read and change records
    Commenter or Read-only Read only
  • Grok on grok.com. Grok's docs say connectors are open to all Grok users. On Grok Business or Enterprise, a team admin adds connectors first.

  • A free Upsy account.

  • On Airtable Enterprise, your admin may need to allow the integration if third-party apps are restricted.

Set it up

  1. Go to upsy.ai and click Set up Upsy.
  2. On Upsy's Apps page, find Airtable and click Connect.
  3. Airtable asks which bases, apps and workspaces to share. Pick only the ones Grok needs. You can add more later from Airtable's integrations page.
  4. On the Assistants page, click Add assistant, then choose Grok under Which assistant? Upsy shows a setup prompt and the address https://upsy.ai/connect.
  5. In Grok, either paste the setup prompt into a chat, approve the card Grok shows and open the sign-in link, or add it by hand. On grok.com, open Connectors, click New Connector, then Custom, paste the address and sign in. The custom connector guide has the details.
  6. Upsy opens a sign-in page. Choose Airtable's level for Grok and click Allow.
  7. Paste the Help Grok remember message into Grok, so it uses Airtable in new chats without you naming Upsy.

If Grok is already connected to Upsy, steps 2 and 3 are enough. Airtable starts at Full access for every assistant, so change it on Airtable's page in Upsy if you'd rather start read-only.

In Grok Bot, paste the same setup prompt into a Bot chat, then type @ and pick Upsy for tasks that need Airtable.

Check that it works

Ask Grok: "Using Upsy, which Airtable bases can you see? For the first one, list its tables and their fields."

Grok should list the bases you shared, then describe one base's tables and field names. If a base is missing, you didn't share it at sign-in. See Troubleshooting.

What Grok can do with Airtable

Airtable's tool list covers records, schema, interfaces and automations.

Reading:

  • List workspaces and bases, and find a base by name.
  • Read tables, fields and views.
  • List records with filters and sorting, or search a table by keyword.
  • Show records as a kanban or grouped view.
  • Read interface pages and form layouts.
  • See automations and how they're set up.

Changing:

  • Create, update and delete records. Creating is capped at 10 records per request, so big imports take several calls.
  • Undo an eligible change with Airtable's revert tool.
  • Create bases and tables, rename tables, delete tables, and add fields or edit their names and formulas. Changing a field's type or select options still needs the Airtable app.
  • Submit a form.
  • Create interfaces and pages, or delete them.
  • Draft automations. They stay off until you turn them on in Airtable, and automations with scripts can't be built this way.

Choose Airtable's level for each assistant:

  • Read-only: only tools Airtable marks as read-only. Good for reports and lookups.
  • Pick actions: only the tools you tick. For example, create and update records, but no deleting and no schema changes. Tools Airtable adds later stay off until you tick them.
  • Full access: every tool, including deleting tables and creating bases, within your Airtable role.
  • No access: Grok can't reach Airtable.

Prompts to try

  • "In my Content Calendar base, which posts are scheduled for next week and still missing an image?"
  • "Add these three leads to the Contacts table in my CRM base, with the source set to 'Webinar'."
  • "Read the last email from Priya at Northwind and update her record in the CRM: stage to Proposal, next step to 'Send pricing'."
  • "Count the records in Inventory with stock under 10, grouped by supplier."
  • "Create a Hiring base with Candidates and Interviews tables, linked to each other, with sensible fields."
  • "Summarize what changed in the Projects table this week."

The email prompt needs Gmail too. See connect Gmail to Grok.

Troubleshooting

A base is missing

Airtable only shares the bases you picked at sign-in. Add the base on Airtable's integrations page, or remove Airtable in Upsy and connect again with the base selected.

Grok can read records but not change them

Check your role in that base. Commenters and Read-only collaborators can only read, and Editors can't change tables or fields. If your role is fine, check Grok's level in Upsy: Read-only blocks every change, and Pick actions blocks anything you didn't tick.

Only "interface only" access shows up

Airtable says this means you can use an interface but don't have access to the base behind it. Ask a base owner or creator for Editor access or higher.

Requests fail with a 429 error

Airtable allows about 5 requests a second per base and asks you to wait 30 seconds after a 429. Ask for one table at a time, or fewer records.

Free plan calls stop working

Airtable says MCP calls follow its standard API rate limits. Its Free plan also caps API calls at 1,000 a month per workspace, and Team at 100,000, though Airtable doesn't say whether MCP calls count toward those. If calls start failing mid-month, check your workspace's API usage in Airtable.

A development base returns a 403 error

Airtable blocks MCP calls to development bases. Use the production base. More connector fixes are in Grok connectors not working.

Security and privacy

  • Grok never holds your Airtable login. Upsy keeps the sign-in and calls Airtable for Grok.
  • Two filters apply. Airtable shares only the bases you picked, within your role. Upsy's level decides which tools Grok may use.
  • History in Upsy lists every Airtable call Grok made, under Grok's name.
  • Alerts: Upsy emails you if one assistant deletes 50+ items or reads 100+ items within 10 minutes. Airtable's delete tools count. You're also told when a new assistant or app connects.
  • Turning it off: set Airtable to No access for Grok, turn Grok off with one click, or remove the integration in Airtable under your profile's Integrations, Third-party integrations.
  • Upsy is built by Upstash. It's free for personal use, has no ads and doesn't sell your data.

FAQ

Can Grok update my Airtable records?

Yes. Once Airtable is connected through Upsy at Full access, or with Pick actions and the update tool ticked, Grok can add and edit records in the bases you shared, as long as you're at least an Editor.

Is there a Grok Airtable integration on the free plan?

Airtable's MCP server works on every plan, Free included, and Upsy is free for personal use. Airtable's Free plan has low API limits, so heavy use may hit them.

Can Grok delete my Airtable data?

Airtable's server can delete records, tables, interfaces and automations, so it can at Full access. Read-only or Pick actions rule that out. Airtable also has a revert tool for undoing eligible changes.

Can Grok build a new base for me?

Yes, at Full access, or with Pick actions and the create-base tool ticked. It can add tables, fields and links, but field types and select options still have to be changed in Airtable.

Can Grok turn on Airtable automations?

No. Grok can draft and update automations, but Airtable leaves them off until you switch them on in Airtable yourself.
