# How to connect Google Drive, Docs and Sheets to Hermes Agent

> Let Hermes Agent search and read your Google Drive, suggest edits in Google Docs and update Google Sheets, while you choose exactly what it may change.

## Short answer

Hermes Agent's bundled Google Workspace skill reaches Drive, Docs and Sheets through an OAuth client you create in Google Cloud, with full Drive access that includes sharing and permanent deletion. Its hosted connectors may offer them too. Through Upsy, one Google Drive connection gives Hermes search and reading in Drive, suggestions and comments in Docs, and cell updates in Sheets, with no Cloud project and no tool that deletes, moves or shares a file. It takes about five minutes.

## The built-in way

### The Google Workspace skill

The [google-workspace skill](https://github.com/NousResearch/hermes-agent/blob/main/skills/productivity/google-workspace/SKILL.md) is Hermes's answer for Google Workspace. It uses the Google Workspace CLI (`gws`) when that's installed, and Google's Python libraries otherwise. Its commands:

- **Drive:** search, show a file's details, upload a local file, download (Docs and Slides as PDF and Sheets as CSV by default), create folders, share with a person, a domain or anyone with the link, and delete. Deleting goes to the trash unless you add `--permanent`.
- **Sheets:** create a spreadsheet, read a range, write a range and append rows.
- **Docs:** read, tab by tab, create a Doc, and add text at the end. Nothing changes existing text, suggests edits or comments.

Setup is the Cloud project, six APIs, Desktop app OAuth client and test user described in the [Gmail guide](/guides/hermes/gmail). One token then covers Drive, Docs and Sheets along with your Gmail and Calendar. Two errors from the skill's own troubleshooting table: `HttpError 403: Access Not Configured` means an API isn't enabled in your project, and `AUTHENTICATED (partial)` means the token predates newer permissions, like Drive writes or Doc edits, so you revoke and authorize again.

### Hosted connectors

Since [v0.22.0](https://github.com/NousResearch/hermes-agent/releases/tag/v0.22.0), Hermes reaches hosted apps through the Nous tool gateway after a browser sign-in. Nous's docs name Gmail; Hermes's code also knows Google Drive, Docs and Sheets, so `hermes connectors list` shows which you can use. Their actions, and any read-only mode, aren't documented.

### Other MCP servers

The community server [google_workspace_mcp](https://github.com/taylorwilsdon/google_workspace_mcp) covers twelve Google services and has a `--read-only` flag, but you host it with an OAuth client from your own Cloud project. Google's [Drive MCP server](https://developers.google.com/workspace/drive/api/guides/configure-mcp-server), in developer preview, can't edit Docs or Sheets, and Hermes's login names Google Drive as a server that needs a client id and secret of your own.

If full Drive access through your own Cloud project is fine, the skill covers a lot, including new Sheets and Docs.

### Where Upsy fits

- **No Cloud project.** One Google sign-in, in Upsy.
- **Suggestions, not overwrites.** Changes to a Doc arrive as suggestions you accept or reject. Direct edits stay off unless you pick them.
- **Comments** on a passage in a Doc.
- **Sheets by row and column:** Hermes reads ranges with row numbers and column letters, updates cells and adds rows.
- **Nothing destructive in Drive.** No tool deletes, trashes, moves, renames or shares a file.
- **Read-only or Pick actions,** a history, and up to five Google accounts.

## What you need

- Hermes Agent with a model to run it. Steps checked against [v0.22.2](https://github.com/NousResearch/hermes-agent/releases).
- A Google account. Hermes only reaches files that account can open, shared drives included. On Google Workspace, your admin may [restrict outside apps](https://knowledge.workspace.google.com/admin/apps/control-which-apps-access-google-workspace-data).
- A free Upsy account.

## Connect Google Drive, Docs and Sheets to Hermes Agent

In Upsy, Google Docs and Google Sheets come with the Google Drive app. The catalog lists them on their own so you can find them, but connecting either one connects Google Drive.

1. Make a free Upsy account at [upsy.ai](https://upsy.ai).
2. On the **Apps** page, click **Connect an app**, then **Connect** on Google Drive. Upsy notes that Drive goes through Composio for now. Click **Continue** and approve the Google account whose files Hermes may reach.
3. Under **Assistants**, click **Add assistant** and pick **Hermes** under **Which assistant?**.
4. Save Upsy in Hermes's config:

   ```
   hermes config set mcp_servers.upsy.url https://upsy.ai/connect && hermes config set mcp_servers.upsy.auth oauth
   ```

5. Run `hermes mcp login upsy`. On the Upsy page, sign in, keep Google Drive ticked, and choose **Read-only** to start or **All** if Hermes may save files, update Sheets and suggest changes in Docs. Click **Allow**.
6. Run `hermes mcp test upsy` to see the tools, and `/reload-mcp` in any open Hermes chat.
7. Optional: to let Hermes edit Docs without suggestions, open Hermes Agent's page in Upsy, click **Pick actions…** next to Google Drive, and turn on **Edit a Google Doc directly**.

If Hermes already uses Upsy for another app, do step 2, then `/reload-mcp`: a new app starts at Full access for your assistants. Why config commands rather than `hermes mcp add`: see [how to add an MCP server to Hermes Agent](/guides/hermes/add-mcp-server).

## Check that it works

Ask Hermes:

> Using upsy, find the Google Doc I changed most recently and summarize it in three bullets.

Hermes should call `mcp_upsy_drive_recent`, then `mcp_upsy_docs_read`, and answer with the Doc's title, link and summary. Upsy's **History** lists the read under Hermes Agent, with the file's name.

## What Hermes can do with Drive, Docs and Sheets

**Google Drive**

- `drive_search` finds files by name or content, up to 25 at a time. `drive_recent` lists the files changed most recently.
- `drive_read` returns a file's text: Docs and Slides as text, Sheets as CSV, and the text of PDFs and Word files, for files up to 20 MB. Long files come in parts of 40,000 characters.
- `drive_upload` saves a new file, optionally in a folder: up to 3 MB that Hermes produced, or a copy of an email attachment or one of your Upsy files up to 24 MB. Text can become a Google Doc, and CSV a Google Sheet. It never changes an existing file.

**Google Docs**

- `docs_read` returns a Doc as Markdown, with headings, lists, tables and every tab. Suggestions not yet accepted are marked.
- `docs_suggest` replaces or deletes text, or adds paragraphs at the end, up to 50 changes at once, as suggestions.
- `docs_comment` comments on a passage.
- `docs_edit` makes the same changes directly. Earlier wording stays in the Doc's version history.

**Google Sheets**

- `sheets_read` lists the tabs and their sizes, and returns a range with row numbers and column letters: the first 200 rows of a tab by default.
- `sheets_update` writes cells as if typed, so formulas like `=SUM(B2:B9)` work. It overwrites what's there, up to 10,000 cells per call.
- `sheets_append` adds rows after the last row of a table, and `sheets_add_tab` adds a tab.

Upsy can't edit Slides, share files, or rename, move or trash them.

| Level | What Hermes can do |
|---|---|
| Read-only | Find files and read them, including Docs and Sheets |
| Full access | Also save new files, suggest changes and comment in Docs, and update Sheets |
| Pick actions | The tools you choose, including direct Doc edits, which no other level allows |
| No access | Nothing in Drive |

## Prompts to try

- "Using upsy, read my 'Budget 2026' sheet and tell me which categories are over plan."
- "Tighten the summary in my CV doc. Make the changes as suggestions."
- "Comment on the pricing paragraph in the proposal asking Ana to confirm the numbers."
- "Add three rows to the Expenses tab: coffee 4.50, train 23, lunch 18."
- "Turn these meeting notes into a Google Doc in my Meetings folder."
- "Every Friday at 17:00, read the Weekly KPIs sheet and send me what changed."

## Troubleshooting

### `hermes mcp list` shows upsy as disabled

That happens when `hermes mcp add` timed out and you chose to save it anyway. Turn it back on, then test and reload:

```
hermes config set mcp_servers.upsy.enabled true
hermes mcp test upsy
```

### Hermes saves the file on your computer instead

Hermes has its own file tools. Say "save it to my Google Drive with upsy", and name the folder.

### "Couldn't find … in the Doc"

Upsy places changes and comments by matching text as `docs_read` shows it. Ask Hermes to read the Doc again and copy the passage exactly, without `#` marks or table bars. If the text appears several times, Upsy asks for more of the text around it.

### Hermes says it changed the Doc, but it looks the same

The changes are suggestions. Look for colored suggested text, or open Tools › Review suggested edits in the Doc to accept or reject them.

### Hermes says it can't edit the Doc directly

That's by design: Full access suggests. Turn on **Edit a Google Doc directly** under Pick actions for Google Drive, then run `/reload-mcp`.

### A Sheet update overwrote cells

Restore them from the Sheet's version history. Next time, ask Hermes to read the range first, or to add rows instead.

### The file is too big

Upsy reads files up to 20 MB. It saves up to 3 MB that Hermes produced, and copies attachments or Upsy files up to 24 MB.

### Google's consent screen names Composio

While Google reviews Upsy's own Google app, Drive signs in through Composio's verified one and asks for full Drive access. Upsy uses it only for the tools above, when an assistant you allowed asks.

## Security and privacy

- **Hermes holds only an Upsy token.** The skill's Google token, by contrast, can share a file with anyone who has the link or delete it for good.
- **Docs and Sheets are often shared,** so a comment or change can reach other people. Keep Drive on Read-only for jobs that only read.
- **History** lists each search, read, save and edit under Hermes Agent, with the file's name.
- **Alerts:** Upsy emails you when a single assistant reads from your apps 100 or more times within 10 minutes.
- **Turning it off:** set Google Drive to No access for Hermes, or click **Remove Hermes Agent**. Disconnecting Google Drive under Apps cuts it off for every assistant and deletes the Composio connection.

## FAQ

### Does Hermes Agent work with Google Workspace?

Yes. Its bundled google-workspace skill covers Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Contacts, Sheets and Docs after a Google Cloud setup, and its hosted connectors reach apps such as Gmail through Nous's gateway. Upsy covers Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Docs and Sheets without one. See [Gmail](/guides/hermes/gmail) and [Google Calendar](/guides/hermes/google-calendar).

### Can Hermes Agent edit Google Docs?

The skill adds text at the end of a Doc. Through Upsy, Hermes suggests changes anywhere in it, comments, and edits directly only if you allow it.

### Can Hermes Agent edit Google Sheets?

Yes. The skill writes ranges and appends rows. Through Upsy, Hermes updates cells, adds rows and adds tabs.

### Can Hermes create a new Google Doc or Sheet?

Yes. The skill creates both. Through Upsy, Hermes saves text as a new Google Doc, or CSV as a new Google Sheet.

### Can Hermes delete my Drive files?

The skill can, to the trash or permanently. Through Upsy it can't: no Upsy tool deletes, trashes or moves files.

### Can Hermes read PDFs in my Drive?

Yes. Upsy extracts the text of PDFs and Word files up to 20 MB. More Hermes guides are in the [Hermes Agent hub](/guides/hermes).

Upsy connects personal AI assistants (Muse, Grok, ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, Devin) to your Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Slack, Notion and other apps through one MCP server, with a shared memory, files and a cloud browser signed in to your sites. You choose what each assistant may do in each app, see everything it did, and turn it off in one click. Upsy is free. To add Upsy to an assistant, add a remote MCP server (Streamable HTTP) named Upsy at https://upsy.ai/connect. It signs in with OAuth; there is no API key.
