# Hermes Agent connectors: connect your apps to Hermes

> What Hermes Agent connects to on its own (skills, its MCP catalog, hosted connectors), what's missing, and how to add Gmail, Calendar, Drive and Slack.

## Short answer

Hermes Agent reaches other apps four ways: bundled skills (Google Workspace, GitHub, Notion, email), a catalog of 65 MCP servers Nous Research has reviewed, hosted connectors through the Nous tool gateway (new in v0.22.0), and any MCP server you add yourself. Its messaging gateway puts Hermes in Telegram, Discord, Slack or WhatsApp, but as a bot you talk to, not access to your own accounts. For Gmail, Calendar and Drive without a Google Cloud project, Slack as you, and access limits Hermes can't change, Upsy is one MCP server that holds them all.

## What Hermes Agent is

[Hermes Agent](https://github.com/NousResearch/hermes-agent) is Nous Research's open-source agent, under the MIT license. It runs on your computer or a server, in the terminal, its TUI or Hermes Desktop, with whichever model provider you choose. It keeps its own memory and writes its own skills as it works. Everything here was checked against v0.22.2, the current release.

Its built-in tools come in toolsets: files, terminal, web search, a browser, memory, cron jobs, image generation, subagents and more. `hermes tools` turns them on or off per platform, and the [toolsets reference](https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/docs/reference/toolsets-reference) lists every tool. None of them is built for your email, calendar or work apps. That's what skills, connectors and MCP servers are for.

## What Hermes connects to on its own

| App | Built into Hermes? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Gmail | Skill, hosted connector | The Google Workspace skill needs your own Google Cloud project and OAuth client. The himalaya skill reads and sends over IMAP and SMTP. Gmail is also a hosted connector. |
| Google Calendar, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Contacts | Skill | The same Google Workspace skill and Cloud project. |
| Notion, Linear | MCP catalog, hosted connector | `hermes mcp install notion`, or a hosted connector. Notion also has a bundled skill. |
| Jira and Confluence, Todoist, ClickUp, Airtable, Asana, Calendly, Fireflies, Stripe, Figma, Sentry, Supabase, Vercel, Dropbox, Miro, monday.com, Intercom, Attio, Close, PayPal, Webflow | MCP catalog | Each installs with `hermes mcp install <name>` and signs in with that service's own login. |
| GitHub | Skill | Bundled skills drive the `gh` CLI. GitHub is left out of the MCP catalog on purpose. |
| Slack, Teams, WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord, Signal, email, SMS | Messaging gateway | Ways to chat with Hermes. In Slack it joins as a bot with a bot token; it doesn't search or send as you. |
| Outlook, Zoho Mail | Not in Hermes's lists | No catalog entry or bundled skill. Check `hermes connectors list` for hosted ones. |

### Skills

Skills are instructions plus scripts that Hermes follows, and many ship with it. The [Google Workspace skill](https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/docs/user-guide/skills/google-workspace) covers Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Contacts, Sheets and Docs. Setup is a conversation: you create a Google Cloud project, turn on the APIs, make a Desktop OAuth client, download its JSON, then paste the redirect URL back into Hermes. While the project's consent screen is in Testing, only test users you add can sign in.

### The MCP catalog

`hermes mcp` opens a picker of servers Nous staff reviewed and merged, and `hermes mcp catalog` prints the list. Nothing is installed until you pick it, and Hermes shows a tool checklist on install. All 65 entries connect over HTTP, and 55 sign in with OAuth. There's no Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack or Outlook among them. See [Hermes's MCP docs](https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/docs/user-guide/features/mcp).

### Hosted connectors

[v0.22.0](https://github.com/NousResearch/hermes-agent/releases/tag/v0.22.0) added connectors: hosted apps "such as Linear and Notion" that Hermes reaches through the Nous tool gateway. You sign in once in your browser. You don't need a Nous account to start: Hermes creates a free connectors-only identity on first use. You can link several named accounts of one app, such as Gmail `work` and `home`, and manage them with `hermes connectors` or `/connectors` ([tool gateway docs](https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/docs/user-guide/features/tool-gateway)). The list of apps comes from Nous's gateway, so `hermes connectors list` shows what's available to you.

### The messaging gateway

`hermes gateway` connects Hermes to Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Signal, Teams, email, SMS and about twenty more ([messaging docs](https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/docs/user-guide/messaging)). You message Hermes there, and it answers with all its tools. The gateway loads your MCP servers too, so whatever you add is reachable from your phone.

## What's missing

- **Google apps without a Cloud project.** The Google Workspace skill wants your own project and OAuth client. While its consent screen is External and in Testing, Google expires refresh tokens after 7 days ([Google's OAuth docs](https://developers.google.com/identity/protocols/oauth2)), so you sign in again weekly. Google's own Drive MCP server also needs your own OAuth client, and its Gmail and Calendar servers can't sign in from Hermes yet ([issue #137289](https://github.com/NousResearch/hermes-agent/issues/137289)).
- **Slack as you.** The gateway's Slack is a bot in your workspace. It can't search your messages or post under your name.
- **Outlook and Zoho Mail.** Neither is in the catalog or the bundled skills.
- **Limits Hermes can't change.** MCP tool filters and `trust: untrusted` live in `config.yaml`, which Hermes's own file tools can still write ([security docs](https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/docs/user-guide/security)). Skills, connectors and MCP servers each have their own sign-in and their own controls.
- **One setup for every assistant.** Hermes's connections work only in Hermes. If you also use Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor, you connect each app again there.

If the catalog already covers your app and Hermes is your only assistant, `hermes mcp install` is the simplest path. Linear or Notion need nothing more.

## How Upsy fills the gap

Upsy is a remote MCP server at `https://upsy.ai/connect`. You add it to Hermes once, and Hermes reaches everything you've connected in Upsy:

- **Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Drive with Docs and Sheets,** with no Google Cloud project and no weekly sign-in. See [connect Gmail to Hermes](/guides/hermes/gmail), [Google Calendar](/guides/hermes/google-calendar) and [Google Drive](/guides/hermes/google-drive).
- **Slack as you:** search messages, read channels and threads, and send.
- **Zoho Mail,** and **Outlook** through Upsy's cloud browser until Microsoft approves Upsy's Outlook connector.
- **Up to five accounts per app,** each with its own access.
- **Apps through their own MCP servers:** Linear, Notion, Jira and Confluence, Todoist, ClickUp, Airtable, Stripe, Sentry and more. Hermes's catalog has most of these too; through Upsy they get its access levels and history, and one sign-in for all your assistants.
- **Access per app, enforced by Upsy:** Full access, Read-only, Pick actions (only the tools you choose) or No access. A tool Hermes isn't allowed is refused on Upsy's server, whatever Hermes's config says.
- **History and alerts:** every call is listed under Hermes in Upsy's History, and Upsy emails you when one assistant sends, deletes or reads a lot within 10 minutes.
- **Memory, files and a logged-in cloud browser** shared with Claude, ChatGPT, Grok and Cursor. Hermes has its own memory and browser, so these matter when you use more than one assistant.

Upsy is built by Upstash and free for personal use.

## Add Upsy to Hermes

1. Sign up at [upsy.ai](https://upsy.ai) with **Set up Upsy**, and connect your apps under **Apps**.
2. Save Upsy in Hermes's config:

   ```
   hermes config set mcp_servers.upsy.url https://upsy.ai/connect
   hermes config set mcp_servers.upsy.auth oauth
   ```

3. Run `hermes mcp login upsy`. On the Upsy page that opens, sign in, untick what Hermes shouldn't use, set each app's access, and click **Allow**.
4. Run `hermes mcp test upsy` to list Upsy's tools. In a Hermes chat that was already open, run `/reload-mcp`.

Upsy's **Assistants** page shows the same steps: click **Add assistant** and pick **Hermes**. We save first and sign in second because `hermes mcp add` gives you only 30 seconds to finish signing in. The details, tool filters and fixes are in [how to add an MCP server to Hermes Agent](/guides/hermes/add-mcp-server).

Upsy connects personal AI assistants (Muse, Grok, ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, Devin) to your Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Slack, Notion and other apps through one MCP server, with a shared memory, files and a cloud browser signed in to your sites. You choose what each assistant may do in each app, see everything it did, and turn it off in one click. Upsy is free. To add Upsy to an assistant, add a remote MCP server (Streamable HTTP) named Upsy at https://upsy.ai/connect. It signs in with OAuth; there is no API key.
