# How to connect Gmail to Grok

> Connect Gmail to Grok so it can search, read, draft and send your email. Grok's built-in connector, its limits, and how to choose what Grok may do.

Updated 2026-10-10 · https://upsy.ai/guides/grok/gmail

## Short answer

Grok has a built-in Gmail connector. Open grok.com/connectors, click New Connector, pick Gmail and sign in with Google. It takes about a minute and is open to every Grok user, but it starts read-only, and sending is something your organization's admins turn on. To let Grok draft and send, use more than one Gmail account, or choose exactly what Grok may do, add Upsy as a custom connector. That takes about five minutes and is free.

## The built-in way

[Grok's Gmail connector](https://docs.x.ai/grok/connectors/gmail-google-calendar) can:

- search your mail with Gmail operators like `from:`, `subject:`, `newer_than:` and `has:attachment`
- read whole messages, including attachments
- write drafts, and send, reply and forward "when write permissions are enabled"
- change labels, trash and delete messages

The catch is the permission model. The base connection only reads (Google's `gmail.readonly` permission). In the docs' words, "write and send capabilities are enabled progressively by your organization's administrators." So for many people, Grok can find and summarize email but won't send it. [Can Grok send emails?](/guides/grok/send-email) covers why.

Other limits:

- Gmail and Google Calendar are separate connectors, each with its own Google sign-in.
- The docs don't say whether you can connect a second Gmail account.
- Grok Bot doesn't use this connector. It has its own Gmail plugin, which holds [one mailbox at a time](https://cursor.com/help/grok-bot/connect-plugins). On August 28, 2026, Google briefly blocked it with "This app is blocked" ([Cursor forum](https://forum.cursor.com/t/grok-bot-unable-to-authenticate-via-gmail-plugin/169782)).

Grok's docs say it doesn't train on your Gmail data or store it. If you only want Grok to search and summarize one inbox, the built-in connector is enough.

## What you need

- **A Grok account.** Connectors are open to every Grok user. On Grok Business or Enterprise, a team admin has to add a connector in the xAI console before members can use it, and that includes Upsy as a custom connector.
- **For Grok Bot:** a plan that includes it, such as Cursor Pro or a linked SuperGrok subscription.
- **A Gmail or Google Workspace account.** On a work account, your admin may [limit which apps can reach Google data](https://knowledge.workspace.google.com/admin/apps/control-which-apps-access-google-workspace-data).
- **A free Upsy account.**

## Connect Gmail to Grok

1. Go to [upsy.ai](https://upsy.ai), click **Set up Upsy** and create your account.
2. On the **Apps** page, find **Gmail** and click **Connect**. Upsy explains that Gmail connects through Composio for now (see Troubleshooting). Click **Continue**, choose your Google account and allow access.
3. Optional: connect another Gmail account the same way, such as work and personal. Upsy holds up to five.
4. Open the **Assistants** page, click **Add assistant**, and choose **Grok** under **Which assistant?**. Upsy shows a setup prompt. Click **Copy prompt**.
5. Paste the prompt into a new Grok chat. Grok shows a card to add Upsy. Approve it, then open the sign-in link.
6. On the Upsy page that opens, sign in. Every app starts ticked, with full access. Switch **Gmail** to **Read-only** if Grok should only read, untick anything Grok shouldn't use, and click **Allow**.

To add Upsy by hand instead: on grok.com, open Connectors, click **New Connector**, then **Custom**, paste this address and complete the sign-in:

```
https://upsy.ai/connect
```

For Grok Bot, paste the same prompt into a Bot chat. Then type @ in any Bot chat and pick Upsy to use it there.

## Check that it works

Send Grok this:

> Using Upsy, find the newest email in my Gmail inbox and summarize it in two lines.

Grok should search through Upsy and reply with the sender, the subject and a short summary. In Upsy, open **History**: the search and the read show up under Grok. If Grok answers from its own Gmail connector instead, see Troubleshooting.

## What Grok can do with Gmail

Through Upsy, Grok gets these tools for each Gmail account you allow:

- **Find and read:** search conversations with Gmail search syntax (`search_threads`), read one message (`get_message`) or a whole thread, open attachments up to 10 MB, and list your labels and drafts.
- **Write:** save a draft (`create_draft`), including a reply in its thread, with files from your Upsy files or another email attached. Send an email (`send_message`): a new one, a reply in its thread, or a saved draft.
- **Manage drafts:** send a draft as it is, or delete it.
- **Organize:** archive, mark read or unread, star, mark important, add or remove labels (new names are created), move mail back to the inbox, and move it to the trash or out again. Trashed mail stays recoverable for 30 days. Upsy has no tool that deletes an email for good.
- **Save to Drive:** copy an email's attachment into Google Drive, if you've connected Drive.

You choose the access level for each Gmail account:

| Level | What Grok can do |
|---|---|
| Full access | Everything above |
| Read-only | Search, read, open attachments, list labels and drafts |
| Pick actions | Only the tools you tick, for example drafts but not sending |
| No access | Nothing in that account |

With several accounts, each tool takes an `account`, the address to act as. When Grok leaves it out, Upsy uses the first one.

## Prompts to try

- "Search my Gmail for invoices from the last 30 days and list the sender, amount and date of each."
- "Read my thread with Sarah about the lease and draft a reply that accepts Tuesday. Don't send it."
- "Send the draft you just wrote."
- "Archive every newsletter in my inbox older than a week and mark them read."
- "From my work address, email the agenda to the three people in yesterday's thread."
- "Save the PDF from my accountant's last email to my Google Drive."

## Troubleshooting

### You may see Composio on Google's sign-in screen

That's expected for now. While Google reviews Upsy's own Google app, Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Drive sign in through Composio's verified Google app. Google's consent screen names Composio, not Upsy, and asks for full mail access. Upsy only acts on your email when an assistant you allowed asks, within the access you set. This is temporary.

### Grok drafts the email but says it can't send

Grok is probably using its built-in Gmail connector, which starts read-only. Ask it to send "with Upsy". If Upsy refuses too, check that Gmail is set to Full access for Grok, or that **Send a Gmail message** is picked under Pick actions.

### Grok uses its own Gmail connector instead of Upsy

With both connected, Grok picks one. Mention Upsy in the request, or disconnect Grok's built-in Gmail at grok.com/connectors. The setup prompt also asks Grok to save a memory that Upsy holds your email, so later chats reach for it without being told.

### The send card shows the wrong From address

With more than one Gmail account, Upsy sends from the first one unless Grok names another. Tell Grok which address to send from, such as "send it from my work account, name@company.com".

### Google blocks the sign-in on a work account

Your Google Workspace admin decides which third-party apps can use company data. Ask them to allow the app named on Google's screen, then connect again.

### Grok Bot won't add a second Gmail account

Its Gmail plugin holds one mailbox, and people [report](https://forum.cursor.com/t/grok-bot-second-gmail-google-workspace-account-flashes-added-then-reverts-to-authorize/168351) a second account flashing "Added" and reverting to Authorize. Connect both accounts in Upsy instead, and attach Upsy in the Bot chat with @.

### Upsy doesn't show up in Grok on a Business plan

On Grok Business and Enterprise, a team admin adds custom connectors in the xAI console first. Ask them to add `https://upsy.ai/connect`, then connect it at grok.com/connectors.

## Security and privacy

- **Grok never gets your Google password or tokens.** It calls Upsy's tools, and Upsy calls Gmail. Upsy doesn't keep copies of your email.
- **You set the access** for each account and each assistant, and you can change it at any time on the Assistants page.
- **History** lists every action Grok takes, under Grok, with short details like an email's subject.
- **Alerts** email you when one assistant sends 20 or more emails in 10 minutes, deletes or trashes 50 or more items, or reads from your apps 100 or more times. You also get an email when a new assistant connects or a new app is connected.
- **Turning it off:** set Gmail to No access for Grok, or click **Remove Grok** on its page in Assistants. It loses access right away. Disconnecting Gmail on the Apps page also removes the connection at Composio.

Upsy is built by Upstash and is free for personal use. It has no ads and doesn't sell your data.

## FAQ

### Can Grok connect to Gmail?

Yes. Grok has a built-in Gmail connector at grok.com/connectors, open to every Grok user. It starts read-only. Upsy adds sending, drafts, several accounts and per-action access.

### Can Grok access Gmail without being able to send?

Yes. That's how Grok's built-in connector starts. With Upsy, set Gmail to Read-only and Grok can search and read but can't draft, send or change anything.

### Can Grok read Gmail attachments?

Yes. Grok's built-in connector reads attachments, and so does Upsy, up to 10 MB per file. Upsy can also copy an attachment straight into Google Drive.

### Does it cost anything?

Grok's connectors come with Grok. Upsy is free for personal use.

### Can I connect more than one Gmail account to Grok?

With Upsy, yes: up to five, each with its own access level. See [multiple Gmail accounts in Grok](/guides/grok/multiple-gmail-accounts).

Upsy connects personal AI assistants (Muse, Grok, ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, Devin) to your Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Slack, Notion and other apps through one MCP server, with a shared memory, files and a cloud browser signed in to your sites. You choose what each assistant may do in each app, see everything it did, and turn it off in one click. Upsy is free. To add Upsy to an assistant, add a remote MCP server (Streamable HTTP) named Upsy at https://upsy.ai/connect. It signs in with OAuth; there is no API key.
