# How to connect Linear to ChatGPT: plugin, app and MCP

> ChatGPT's Linear plugin can read and change issues. Add Linear through Upsy to limit ChatGPT to the actions you pick and keep a history of every change.

## Short answer

ChatGPT has a Linear plugin, made by Linear. Open **Plugins**, select Linear, click **Install plugin** and sign in to Linear. It takes a couple of minutes. Since March 2026 it can also take write actions, so it may be all you need. Add Linear through Upsy instead to choose which Linear actions ChatGPT may take yourself, keep a history of every change, or share one Linear connection with your dot, Codex, Claude and other assistants.

## The built-in way

### The Linear plugin

OpenAI's [plugin page](https://openai.com/business/plugins/linear/) lists Linear's developer as Linear Orbit, Inc. OpenAI pitches it for turning issues and comments into status updates and progress reports. Attachments aren't included.

On March 27, 2026, OpenAI [updated the Linear app](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/6825453-chatgpt-release-notes) with new actions, "including new write capabilities where supported". Two details from [OpenAI's forum post](https://community.openai.com/t/updated-box-notion-linear-and-dropbox-apps/1378101) matter:

- The updated app asks Linear for `read` and `write` access, so older connections may need to be reconnected.
- During the switch, both the legacy Linear app and the new **Linear MCP Server** app may appear.

To connect it, open **Settings › Plugins** (or **Plugins** in the sidebar), select Linear, click **Install plugin**, then **Connect**, and approve on Linear's screen ([OpenAI's steps](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001494-connecting-and-managing-app-accounts-in-chatgpt)). In a chat, type **@** and pick Linear, or select it from **+**.

The "Linear app with sync" from October 2025 is gone. OpenAI now says app sync [is no longer available](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001497-troubleshooting-plugins-and-apps-in-chatgpt).

### What you can control

- **When ChatGPT asks, not what it can do.** **Always ask**, **Allow read actions**, **Allow low-risk actions** and, per app, **Allow all actions** [change only when ChatGPT asks](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001495-managing-app-permissions-in-chatgpt), not the access the app has.
- **Turning actions off takes an admin.** In Business, Enterprise and Edu, admins enable the Read actions or Write actions they want, and choose whether new actions start on, read-only or off ([admin controls](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/11509118-admin-controls-security-and-compliance-for-plugins-and-apps)). Personal plans have no such switch.
- **Workspace defaults differ.** Apps start on in Business and off in Enterprise and Edu.
- **Company accounts can be fenced in.** Enterprise can ask OpenAI to block Linear connections that use the company's email domain from ChatGPT workspaces outside the company. Linear is on the list of supported apps.
- **A second account depends on the app.** Some apps offer **Connect another account**; OpenAI doesn't say whether Linear does.

### Where Upsy fits

- **Pick actions yourself:** Read-only, or only the Linear tools you choose, for ChatGPT, without admin settings.
- **One History** of every Linear action, across chats, with refused attempts too.
- **Alerts** by email when an assistant reads or deletes a lot at once.
- **One connection for every assistant:** ChatGPT, your dot, Codex, Claude, Grok and Muse share it, each at its own level.
- **More than one Linear account,** up to five, each with its own access.

## What you need

- **A Linear account.** Linear's [MCP docs](https://linear.app/docs/mcp) list no plan requirement.
- **ChatGPT on the web.** You add Upsy at [chatgpt.com/plugins](https://chatgpt.com/plugins), not in the phone app.
- **Permission to add a custom MCP server.** OpenAI's [help page](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/12584461-connecting-custom-mcp-servers-in-chatgpt) names Business, Enterprise and Edu. In a Business workspace, only admins and owners can create them. In Enterprise and Edu, admins can grant it by role with **Create plugins with MCPs**. On a personal plan, the option shows under **Plugins** when your account has it.
- **Upsy:** a free account.

## Connect Linear to ChatGPT

1. Sign up at [upsy.ai](https://upsy.ai) with **Set up Upsy**.
2. On Upsy's **Apps** page, click **Connect an app** and choose **Linear**. Approve access on Linear's consent screen. No API key is involved.
3. Open **Assistants**, click **Add assistant** and pick **ChatGPT**.
4. In ChatGPT on the web, open **Plugins**, click **Add** (+), then **Create custom MCP server**. Some accounts call it **Add custom MCP server**.
5. Name it Upsy, paste this address and set authentication to **OAuth**:

   ```
   https://upsy.ai/connect
   ```

6. Tick **I understand and want to continue**, then click **Create as a plugin**.
7. Click **Connect** if ChatGPT asks, and **Install plugin** if it shows. On the Upsy page that opens, sign in, set Linear to **Read-only** or leave it at All, and click **Allow**.

Add Upsy this way, not from its listing in the plugin directory, which has a fixed tool list. The [custom MCP server guide](/guides/chatgpt/custom-connector) covers each screen and its errors.

Already have Upsy in ChatGPT? Connect Linear in Upsy and start a new chat. You don't need to refresh the plugin: Linear's tools reach ChatGPT through Upsy's `app_tools`, which is already in its tool list. Your [dot](/guides/chatgpt/dot) uses ChatGPT's plugins, so it gets Linear too, at ChatGPT's level.

## Check that it works

In a new chat, send:

```
@Upsy Which Linear workspace are you connected to? Then list the issues assigned to me that changed this week.
```

ChatGPT should name the workspace and list your issues. Reading runs through Upsy's `app_read`, which is marked read-only, so with **Allow read actions** ChatGPT won't stop to ask. Upsy's **History** then shows "linear get workspace" and "linear list issues" under ChatGPT.

## What ChatGPT can do with Linear

Upsy passes on Linear's own tools, 76 when we connected it in October 2026.

**Reading (Read-only):**

- Search and filter issues, including Triage Intelligence suggestions for issues in triage.
- Open projects, milestones, initiatives, cycles, documents, comments and status updates.
- List teams, people, statuses, labels, templates and saved views.
- Read your Linear inbox, releases and release notes.

**Changing (Full access):**

- Create an issue or edit one: status, assignee, priority, labels, due date, estimate, cycle, project, parent, and links to other issues.
- Post comments and project or initiative status updates.
- Create and edit projects, milestones, initiatives and documents.
- Snooze or mark inbox items, and share an issue with a teammate.
- Delete comments, attachments and status updates. There was no tool to delete issues or projects.
- Approve or merge pull requests in Linear's code review ("diffs").

**Pick actions** is where Upsy differs most from ChatGPT's settings. For example, tick `save_comment` and `save_status_update` so ChatGPT can report progress, but leave out `save_issue` and `merge_diff`. `save_issue` covers both new issues and edits. Tools Linear adds later stay off until you tick them.

Changes go through Upsy's `app_call`, which is marked as able to change or delete, so by default ChatGPT asks before each one. **Allow all actions** removes that prompt; leave it off if you want a check.

## Prompts to try

- "@Upsy What's in my Linear inbox? Group it by project, and snooze anything about the old billing system until Monday."
- "Find every Urgent issue in the Mobile team with no assignee, and suggest an owner for each."
- "Write this week's status update for the Checkout redesign project from its closed issues. Show me the draft before you post it."
- "Search my Gmail for bug reports from customers this week and file each one in the Support team's triage. Ask me before each."
- "List the bugs we closed this cycle, grouped by label, as release notes for customers."

The Gmail prompt needs Gmail connected to Upsy too.

## Troubleshooting

### ChatGPT's Linear app answers questions but won't create issues

Your connection may predate the March 2026 update, or you may be using the legacy app. If two Linear apps show up, use the **Linear MCP Server** one. Reconnect it under **Settings › Plugins** and approve the new access; OpenAI says that's the first thing to check.

### "All permissions are required"

Select **Reconnect** and approve every permission Linear asks for. OpenAI requires them all for the apps you selected.

### Linear shows "Disabled by admin"

In a workspace, ask an admin to enable Linear in the Admin console under **Plugins**. On a personal account, OpenAI says this message alone doesn't mean an admin blocked it; check your plan and region.

### Create custom MCP server is missing

In a Business workspace, only admins and owners can add one. In Enterprise and Edu, ask an admin for **Create plugins with MCPs** on your role.

### "The user hasn't allowed you to use Linear's "save_issue""

That's Upsy refusing a tool outside ChatGPT's level. Change Linear's level on ChatGPT's page in Upsy if it should be allowed. The attempt is in History either way.

### A change timed out, and you're not sure it went through

A call can reach Linear even when the answer doesn't reach ChatGPT. Upsy tells ChatGPT to read back before retrying a change. Check Linear yourself before asking again, so you don't get a duplicate issue.

### ChatGPT uses the Linear plugin instead of Upsy

Mention **@Upsy** in the message, or disconnect the Linear plugin.

## Security and privacy

OpenAI treats custom MCP servers as elevated risk and doesn't verify them. With Upsy:

- **ChatGPT never gets your Linear login.** Upsy holds the token from Linear's own sign-in and calls Linear for ChatGPT, within your Linear permissions and the level you set.
- **History** lists every Linear call ChatGPT made, and every one Upsy refused. No one can edit or delete it.
- **Alerts:** Upsy emails you when one assistant reads 100 or more items or deletes 50 or more in 10 minutes, and when a new assistant or app connects.
- **Model training:** on Free, Go, Plus and Pro, OpenAI may use information ChatGPT gets from apps to train models if **Improve the model for everyone** is on ([OpenAI](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/11487775-connected-apps-in-chatgpt)). Business, Enterprise and Edu are excluded by default.
- **Turning it off:** set Linear to No access for ChatGPT, click **Remove ChatGPT** in Upsy, or disconnect Linear on the **Apps** page.

## FAQ

### Does ChatGPT have a Linear integration?

Yes. Linear publishes a plugin in ChatGPT's directory. It reads issues and comments, and since March 2026 it can also take write actions.

### Can ChatGPT create Linear issues?

Yes. With the built-in plugin, after reconnecting for the March 2026 update. Through Upsy, with Full access or with `save_issue` ticked in Pick actions.

### Is there a Linear MCP server for ChatGPT?

Linear hosts one at `https://mcp.linear.app/mcp`, and OpenAI calls its newer app the Linear MCP Server app. Upsy connects to that server and adds per-action access and a history. Linear also offers a read-only address, `https://mcp.linear.app/mcp/readonly`.

### What happened to Linear sync in ChatGPT?

OpenAI retired app sync. ChatGPT now reads Linear live through the app or through Upsy.

### Can ChatGPT use two Linear workspaces?

OpenAI doesn't say whether Linear's plugin offers **Connect another account**. In Upsy, connect each Linear login on the **Apps** page, up to five, and give each its own level for ChatGPT. They need different email addresses: a second sign-in with the same email replaces the first.

### Does Codex get Linear too?

Yes, through Upsy. Run `codex mcp add upsy --url https://upsy.ai/connect`, then `codex mcp login upsy`. Codex gets its own level for Linear. See the [ChatGPT connectors hub](/guides/chatgpt) for the rest.

Upsy connects personal AI assistants (Muse, Grok, ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, Devin) to your Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Slack, Notion and other apps through one MCP server, with a shared memory, files and a cloud browser signed in to your sites. You choose what each assistant may do in each app, see everything it did, and turn it off in one click. Upsy is free. To add Upsy to an assistant, add a remote MCP server (Streamable HTTP) named Upsy at https://upsy.ai/connect. It signs in with OAuth; there is no API key.
