# How to connect Google Sheets to ChatGPT and update cells

> ChatGPT edits Google Sheets in a sidebar on every plan, and through its Drive app in chat. How both work, and how Upsy adds hard limits and a full history.

## Short answer

Yes, ChatGPT can edit Google Sheets. The quickest way is ChatGPT for Google Sheets, a sidebar you install from the Google Workspace Marketplace. It runs on every ChatGPT plan, with limited use on Free and Go. In a normal chat, Sheets comes with ChatGPT's Google Drive app, which can update a Sheet where OpenAI supports it. Add Sheets through Upsy as a custom MCP server when ChatGPT should only read or only add rows, when you want a record of every cell it changed, or when Claude and Grok should use the same Sheets. That takes about five minutes.

## The built-in way

### ChatGPT for Google Sheets: the sidebar

OpenAI made ChatGPT for Excel and Google Sheets available worldwide on May 5, 2026 ([release notes](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/6825453-chatgpt-release-notes)). To set it up:

1. Install ChatGPT from the [Google Workspace Marketplace](https://workspace.google.com/marketplace/app/chatgpt/870214997678).
2. Open a Sheet and open ChatGPT from the **Extensions** menu.
3. Sign in with your ChatGPT account.

In the sidebar, ChatGPT builds, updates and explains the spreadsheet in place, including multi-tab files full of formulas. OpenAI's [help page](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001063-chatgpt-for-excel-and-google-sheets) lists Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu and K-12. Free and Go get limited use, and Plus and Pro draw on the plan's agentic usage limit. With role-based access, a workspace admin turns it on under **Permissions & roles**.

Where it stops, per OpenAI: sidebar chats are separate from your ChatGPT history and don't sync with it, they can't use ChatGPT's memory, and macros may not be fully supported.

### The Google Drive app: Sheets in a chat

Since March 25, 2026, ChatGPT has no separate Google Sheets app. Docs, Sheets and Slides actions come with the [Google Drive app](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/10929079-google-drive-app-and-setup-in-chatgpt). To connect it, open **Settings › Plugins**, select Google Drive, sign in and approve every permission Google asks for.

Since August 13, 2026, Drive files also show up in ChatGPT's Library. You can keep a Sheet open beside the conversation, and "where supported and authorized, ChatGPT can update the source file directly". That rollout covered Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare on the web, with My Drive and files shared with you, but not Shared Drives yet. OpenAI says some Drive editing features aren't in ChatGPT yet, and doesn't list which Sheets edits the app makes. Access is live: OpenAI has retired app sync.

ChatGPT may ask you to confirm before changing a file. **Settings › Plugins › Permissions** offers **Always ask**, **Allow read actions**, **Allow low-risk actions** and **Allow all actions**. OpenAI is clear that these change when ChatGPT asks, not what it can do ([Connected apps in ChatGPT](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/11487775-connected-apps-in-chatgpt)). Turning single Drive actions off is a workspace admin control.

So, **can ChatGPT edit Google Sheets?** Yes. The sidebar edits the Sheet you have open on any plan, and in chat the Drive app updates Sheets where supported. If your work happens inside one spreadsheet, the sidebar is the better tool.

### Where Upsy fits

- **A hard limit, not just a prompt.** Give ChatGPT Read-only access, or pick single actions, such as adding rows but never overwriting cells. ChatGPT's settings decide when it asks; Upsy's decide what it can do.
- **A history of changes.** Each read and write is listed in Upsy, down to the cells: "changed A7:B7 in the Sheet Budget".
- **Shared Drives.** Upsy's search covers them as well as My Drive.
- **Several Google accounts,** up to five, each with its own level.
- **Every assistant.** The same Sheets work in Claude, Grok and Muse, and in your [ChatGPT dot](/guides/chatgpt/dot), which uses the plugins you add in ChatGPT.

Upsy edits by cell range from the chat. It doesn't format cells, sort, build charts or delete rows.

## What you need

- **ChatGPT on the web,** to add a custom MCP server (a connector that lets ChatGPT use another app). In a work workspace, an admin has to allow **Create custom MCP servers** for your role.
- **In Europe on Plus or Pro,** check first that you can add one. [Gmail with ChatGPT in the EU and UK](/guides/chatgpt/gmail-eu) has what we found. The Sheets sidebar is available worldwide.
- **The Google account that has your Sheets.** On Google Workspace, an admin may [limit third-party apps](https://knowledge.workspace.google.com/admin/apps/control-which-apps-access-google-workspace-data).
- **A free Upsy account.**

## Connect Google Sheets to ChatGPT

1. Go to [upsy.ai](https://upsy.ai) and click **Set up Upsy**.
2. Open **Apps**, click **Connect an app**, and click **Connect** on the **Google Sheets** card. Sheets comes with Google Drive, which connects through Composio for now: click **Continue**, choose your Google account and allow access.
3. Open **Assistants**, click **Add assistant** and pick **ChatGPT** under **Which assistant?**. Copy the address:

   ```
   https://upsy.ai/connect
   ```

4. In ChatGPT on the web, open **Plugins**, click **Add** (+) and choose **Create custom MCP server**.
5. Name it Upsy, paste the address and set authentication to **OAuth**.
6. Select **I understand and want to continue**, then click **Create as a plugin**.
7. Click **Connect** if ChatGPT asks. On the page that says "ChatGPT wants to access your Upsy", sign in and set Google Drive to **Read-only** or **All**. Click **Allow**.
8. If ChatGPT shows **Install plugin**, install it.

For finer control, choose **Pick actions** for Google Drive on ChatGPT's page in Upsy. The [custom MCP server guide](/guides/chatgpt/custom-connector) explains each ChatGPT screen.

## Check that it works

Start a new chat and send:

> @Upsy Which of my Google Sheets changed this week? Read the first ten rows of the newest one.

ChatGPT should list recent files, then show the Sheet's rows with their numbers. Reading is marked read-only, so ChatGPT may not ask first. Upsy's **History** shows the read under ChatGPT.

## What ChatGPT can do with your Sheets

| Upsy tool | What it does | Asks you first? |
|---|---|---|
| Read a Google Sheet | Lists the tabs and their sizes, and reads a range like `A1:F50`, or a tab's first 200 rows. Shows values as displayed, not formulas. | Not if reads are allowed |
| Update cells in a Google Sheet | Writes values from a start cell as if typed, formulas included. Up to 10,000 cells at a time. Overwrites what's there. | Yes, by default |
| Add rows to a Google Sheet | Adds rows after the last row of a tab's table | Yes, by default |
| Add a tab to a Google Sheet | Adds an empty tab | Yes, by default |
| Save a file to Google Drive | Turns CSV into a new Google Sheet, up to 3 MB | Yes, by default |

ChatGPT asks before any tool not marked read-only, and Upsy flags Sheets changes as sensitive, since Sheets are often shared. To ask less, approve a tool for the rest of a chat, or change **Settings › Plugins › Permissions**. No Upsy tool deletes a row, a tab or a file.

Access levels apply to Google Drive as a whole, Docs included; the [Google Docs guide](/guides/chatgpt/google-docs) covers those tools.

- **Read-only:** search Drive and read Sheets.
- **Full access:** also update cells, add rows and tabs, and save new Sheets.
- **Pick actions:** only the tools you switch on. For a shared expense log, turn on reading and adding rows, and leave updating off.
- **No access:** nothing.

## Prompts to try

- "@Upsy Add a row to my Reading list sheet: The Overstory, Richard Powers, started today."
- "@Upsy In Team OKRs 2026, what's the status of every key result Priya owns?"
- "@Upsy Make a Google Sheet called Trip budget with columns Item, Cost and Paid by, and fill in these five rows."
- "@Upsy In the Products sheet, cut the price of everything in the Sale category by 20%. Show me the cells first."
- "@Upsy Read my Leads sheet and draft a follow-up email to each lead marked Warm." This needs Gmail connected in Upsy too.

## Troubleshooting

### "ChatGPT needs all requested permissions"

That's the built-in Google Drive app. Select **Try again**, and on Google's screen choose **Select all**. To connect fewer Google apps, use **Select fewer apps** in ChatGPT, then approve everything for those.

### ChatGPT can open a Sheet but not change it

With the Drive app, OpenAI names three causes: the edit isn't supported in ChatGPT, a workspace admin turned the action off, or a Google admin hasn't approved the Sheets write permission. Fix the setting, try the sidebar, or use Upsy at Full access.

### Upsy has no Sheets tools

You probably installed Upsy from ChatGPT's plugin directory. That listing's tools were fixed before any app was connected, so Google Drive isn't in it. Remove it and add Upsy as a custom MCP server with the steps above. If you did, check that Google Drive isn't at No access for ChatGPT, then click **Refresh** in the plugin's settings.

### The same rows were added twice

When a call times out, the change may still have gone through. Before ChatGPT retries, have it read the Sheet back. Remove the extra rows in Sheets yourself, since Upsy can't delete rows.

### ChatGPT wrote to the wrong account's Sheet

With several Google accounts in Upsy, ChatGPT uses the first one unless you name another. Say which: "in my work account (you@company.com)".

### Google's sign-in names Composio

Expected for now. Until Google finishes reviewing Upsy's own Google app, Drive connects through Composio's verified app, and Sheets with it.

## Security and privacy

- **OpenAI doesn't review custom MCP servers** and calls them a higher risk. Add only ones you trust.
- **ChatGPT never sees your Google login.** It calls Upsy, and Upsy calls Google through Composio, which doesn't keep what passes through.
- **History** lists every Sheet ChatGPT reads or changes, with the range.
- **Alerts** email you when one assistant reads 100 or more files or emails in 10 minutes, and when a new assistant or app joins your account.
- **Your last check is ChatGPT's prompt.** Upsy has no approval step of its own, so keep Sheets that matter at Read-only or Pick actions.
- **To stop it,** set Google Drive to No access for ChatGPT, click **Remove ChatGPT** on its page, or disconnect Google Drive under Apps.

## FAQ

### Can ChatGPT edit Google Sheets?

Yes. The sidebar edits the open Sheet on every plan, and the Drive app updates Sheets from a chat where supported. Through Upsy, ChatGPT updates cells, adds rows and adds tabs.

### Is there a Google Sheets connector for ChatGPT?

Not a separate one any more. Since March 2026, Sheets actions come with the Google Drive app. The sidebar add-on is the other built-in option.

### Is ChatGPT for Google Sheets free?

It's on the Free plan with limited use. Plus and Pro get more, counted against the plan's agentic usage limit, and Business and Enterprise use follows their plan's credits.

### Can my ChatGPT dot use my Google Sheets?

Yes, once Upsy is added as a plugin in ChatGPT: your dot uses the same plugins. Dots come with Pro and Business Premium.

### Can ChatGPT read Sheets in a Shared Drive?

ChatGPT's Library doesn't show Shared Drives yet. Through Upsy, ChatGPT can search and read Sheets in any Shared Drive your account can open.

Upsy connects personal AI assistants (Muse, Grok, ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, Devin) to your Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Slack, Notion and other apps through one MCP server, with a shared memory, files and a cloud browser signed in to your sites. You choose what each assistant may do in each app, see everything it did, and turn it off in one click. Upsy is free. To add Upsy to an assistant, add a remote MCP server (Streamable HTTP) named Upsy at https://upsy.ai/connect. It signs in with OAuth; there is no API key.
