# How to use Gmail with ChatGPT in the EU and UK

> ChatGPT's built-in Gmail connector isn't offered on Plus and Pro in the EU, EEA, UK and Switzerland. What that means, and what works instead.

## Short answer

On ChatGPT Plus and Pro, OpenAI doesn't offer its built-in Gmail and Outlook connectors to people in the EEA (which includes the EU), Switzerland or the UK. A ChatGPT Business workspace doesn't have that limit. On Plus or Pro, you can try adding Gmail through a custom MCP server such as Upsy, which takes about ten minutes, but we couldn't confirm that OpenAI allows custom MCP servers on those plans in Europe. Check it on your own account first; the steps are below. If it isn't allowed, Claude's own Gmail connector is open to all Claude users.

## What OpenAI has said

These are OpenAI's own statements, from its [release notes](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/6825453-chatgpt-release-notes) and help center:

| Date | What OpenAI said |
|---|---|
| June 4, 2025 | Connectors in deep research: Team, Enterprise and Edu "globally"; Plus and Pro except in Switzerland, the EEA and the UK |
| Aug 11, 2025 | "Connectors for Plus/Pro plans are not available in EEA, Switzerland, and the UK" |
| Aug 13, 2025 | Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Contacts reach Plus users "globally", with no word on Europe |
| Aug 28, 2026 | Several Google accounts at once, "available globally on supported Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans" |
| Now | Whether a plugin works "depends on your plan, workspace, role, region" ([Plugins in ChatGPT](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001256-plugins-in-chatgpt)) |

No later note says the August 2025 limit was lifted, and OpenAI's help center doesn't currently list which regions have Gmail. So the safe reading, as of October 10, 2026: on Plus or Pro in the EEA, Switzerland or the UK, expect no Gmail or Outlook connector.

What still works there: you can write and paste emails in ChatGPT, and upload messages or files to a chat. ChatGPT just can't search or send from your inbox itself.

## Can you add Gmail with a custom MCP server?

A custom MCP server is a connector that lets ChatGPT use another app. Upsy is one, and it can search, read, draft and send Gmail. Whether you can add one on Plus or Pro in Europe is the open question.

What we know:

- In July 2025, OpenAI limited custom connectors (MCP) on Pro to users outside the EEA, Switzerland and the UK.
- OpenAI's [developer mode article](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/12584461-developer-mode-and-mcp-apps-in-chatgpt), written for Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces, answers "Are there geo restrictions?" with "No."
- OpenAI's [current steps for adding a custom MCP server](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/guides/custom-mcp-server) don't mention regions, or which plans can do it.

What we don't know: whether a Plus or Pro account in the EU or UK sees the option today. We couldn't confirm it either way. The quickest test takes a minute: open Plugins in ChatGPT on the web, click **Add**, and see whether you're offered a custom MCP server. If you are, the setup below works. If not, skip to "If you can't add one" below.

## What you need

- ChatGPT on the web with the custom MCP server option. In a Business workspace, an admin may have to allow it.
- A Gmail or Google Workspace account. On a work account, your Google admin may have to allow the sign-in.
- A free Upsy account at [upsy.ai](https://upsy.ai).

## Add Gmail to ChatGPT through Upsy

1. Sign up at [upsy.ai](https://upsy.ai) with "Set up Upsy".
2. On Upsy's **Apps** page, connect Gmail and sign in with Google. Repeat for each Gmail account, up to five.
3. Open **Assistants**, click **Add assistant**, and pick **ChatGPT** under **Which assistant?** Upsy shows the steps and the address.
4. In ChatGPT on the web, open **Plugins**, click **Add**, and choose to create a custom MCP server. Name it Upsy, paste `https://upsy.ai/connect`, and set authentication to OAuth. Accept the warning, then click **Create as a plugin**. The [custom connector guide](/guides/chatgpt/custom-connector) covers this screen.
5. Click **Connect** if ChatGPT asks. Sign in on the Upsy page that opens and choose what ChatGPT can do with Gmail.
6. Paste the "remember" message Upsy shows into ChatGPT, so it uses Upsy for email without being told.

Connect Gmail in Upsy before step 4. ChatGPT reads Upsy's tool list when you add it, and Gmail's tools are only there once Gmail is connected and allowed.

## Check that it works

Ask ChatGPT: "Using Upsy, find my latest email from my bank and summarize it."

ChatGPT should call Upsy's Gmail search and summarize the email. If it says it has no email tools, see Troubleshooting.

## What ChatGPT can do with Gmail through Upsy

- Search conversations, read messages and whole threads, and read attachments.
- Write drafts, send new emails and send existing drafts.
- Archive, add and remove labels, mark read or unread, move to trash and restore.
- Copy an attachment into Google Drive.

With several accounts connected, each tool takes the address to act as, so "send it from my work account" works.

For each assistant, you set Gmail to **Full access**, **Read-only** (only tools that only read), **Pick actions** (only the actions you choose, such as drafting but not sending) or **No access**. ChatGPT also asks you to approve write actions like sending.

For Outlook, Upsy's connector is still Pending until Microsoft approves Upsy. You can sign in to outlook.com in Upsy's cloud browser, and ChatGPT reads and works there instead; see [personal Outlook with ChatGPT](/guides/chatgpt/outlook).

## If you can't add one

- **ChatGPT Business.** OpenAI has offered connectors to Team (now Business), Enterprise and Edu workspaces worldwide, so a Business workspace in Europe should get Gmail.
- **Claude.** Anthropic says its Gmail, Calendar and Drive connectors are [available for all users](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/10166901-use-google-workspace-connectors), with no regional limit. Upsy works with Claude too; see the [Claude hub](/guides/claude).
- **Copy and paste.** For one email, paste it into ChatGPT and paste the reply back.

## Prompts to try

- "Find emails from my landlord this year and list anything I still need to reply to."
- "Draft a polite reply to the latest email from the school, in Dutch."
- "Archive all newsletters from last month in my personal Gmail."
- "Save the PDF attached to my insurer's last email to Google Drive."
- "What did my accountant ask me for in the last three emails?"

## Troubleshooting

### Gmail says "Disabled by admin" on a personal account

OpenAI says this message on a personal account doesn't by itself mean an admin blocked it, and to check your plan and region ([troubleshooting](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001497-troubleshooting-plugins-apps-in-chatgpt)). In the EEA, Switzerland or the UK on Plus or Pro, region is the likely reason.

### There's no option to create a custom MCP server

Your plan, region or workspace doesn't allow it. Use one of the options under "If you can't add one" above.

### Google's consent screen says Composio

While Google reviews Upsy's own Google app, Gmail signs in through Composio's verified Google app. The screen names Composio and asks for full mail access. Upsy acts on your email only when an assistant you allowed asks.

### ChatGPT says it has no Gmail tools

You probably added Upsy before connecting Gmail. Open Upsy in ChatGPT's Plugins and refresh it, then start a new chat.

## Security and privacy

- ChatGPT never gets your Google password or tokens. It calls Upsy's tools, and Upsy calls Gmail.
- Every action is in Upsy's History under ChatGPT. Upsy emails you if one assistant sends 20 or more emails, deletes 50 or more items, or reads 100 or more emails in 10 minutes.
- Upsy doesn't promise to keep data in the EU. Its [privacy policy](https://upsy.ai/privacy) and [subprocessors list](https://upsy.ai/subprocessors) say what it stores and which companies process it, including Composio for Gmail.
- If you handle other people's email at work, check with whoever looks after data protection there. This guide isn't legal advice.
- One click on the Assistants page turns ChatGPT off, and you can disconnect Gmail on the Apps page. More in [is it safe to connect Gmail to ChatGPT](/guides/chatgpt/is-it-safe-to-connect-gmail).

## FAQ

### Is the ChatGPT Gmail connector available in the EU?

Not on Plus or Pro, going by OpenAI's last statement on it. Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces have connectors worldwide.

### Why does ChatGPT say Gmail isn't available in my country?

OpenAI hasn't offered connectors on Plus and Pro in the EEA, Switzerland and the UK since they launched, and hasn't announced a change.

### Are ChatGPT connectors available in the UK?

The same limit applies to the UK as to the EEA: none on Plus or Pro, available on Business and above.

### Can I use Upsy instead in Europe?

Only if your ChatGPT account can add a custom MCP server, which we couldn't confirm for Plus or Pro in Europe. Check under Plugins; if it isn't there, Claude with Upsy is the alternative.

---

Upsy connects personal AI assistants (Muse, Grok, ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, Devin) to your Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Slack, Notion and other apps through one MCP server, with a shared memory, files and a cloud browser signed in to your sites. You choose what each assistant may do in each app, see everything it did, and turn it off in one click. Upsy is free. To add Upsy to an assistant, add a remote MCP server (Streamable HTTP) named Upsy at https://upsy.ai/connect. It signs in with OAuth; there is no API key.
