# ChatGPT connectors: how to connect your apps to ChatGPT

> Which apps ChatGPT connects to on its own, where its connectors fall short, and how to add any app to ChatGPT and your dot as a custom MCP plugin.

Updated 2026-10-10 · https://upsy.ai/guides/chatgpt

## Short answer

ChatGPT connects to your apps through **plugins**. Open **Plugins** in ChatGPT's sidebar, pick an app such as Gmail or Slack, install it and sign in. It takes a minute per app. For an app the directory doesn't have, you add a custom MCP server (a connector that lets ChatGPT use another app) by its web address.

## Connectors, apps and plugins

The names keep changing:

- **App:** connects ChatGPT to one service, like Google Drive or Slack. ChatGPT used to call these connectors.
- **Plugin:** a package of one or more apps, plus skills (saved instructions) for a task. On July 9, 2026 the app directory became the Plugin directory, and every existing app was packaged as a plugin, with its connections intact.
- **Custom MCP server:** an app you add yourself by its address. ChatGPT saves it as a plugin under your personal plugins.

OpenAI explains the difference in [Plugins in ChatGPT](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001256-plugins-in-chatgpt).

## What ChatGPT connects to on its own

| App | Built in? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Gmail | Yes | Reads and searches mail. Sends one email at a time with your approval on Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise (web). Several accounts since August 28, 2026. |
| Google Calendar | Yes | Several accounts since August 28, 2026. |
| Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides | Yes | Docs, Sheets and Slides come through the Drive app. |
| Outlook Email and Calendar | Work or school only | Personal Outlook.com and Hotmail accounts are turned away. Some actions need a Microsoft admin's consent. |
| Teams, SharePoint | Yes | Microsoft 365 work accounts. |
| Slack, Notion, Linear, Asana, ClickUp, Airtable | Yes | In the plugin directory. |
| Jira and Confluence | Yes | Through the Atlassian Rovo plugin. |
| Granola, Fireflies, Calendly, Stripe | Yes | In the plugin directory. |
| Personal Outlook.com, Hotmail, Live | No | See [connect a personal Outlook account to ChatGPT](/guides/chatgpt/outlook). |

If the plugin you need is in the directory and does what you want, use it. In a work workspace, an admin decides which plugins members can install, and a blocked one shows **Disabled by admin**.

## What's missing

- **Personal Outlook.** ChatGPT's Outlook apps take Microsoft 365 work and school accounts only.
- **Limits on what an app can reach.** ChatGPT's permission settings (Always ask, Allow read actions, Allow low-risk actions, Allow all actions) set when ChatGPT asks before using an app. They don't take any access away, and only workspace admins can switch off single actions.
- **One setup for every assistant.** Apps you connect in ChatGPT stay in ChatGPT. Claude, Grok and Muse each need their own connections, and Claude and Muse hold only one Gmail account each.
- **One record, and alerts.** Each assistant shows what it did only in its own chats, and nothing emails you when one suddenly sends or deletes a lot.
- **A browser that stays signed in.** ChatGPT's agent and [your dot](/guides/chatgpt/dot) browse in their own cloud browsers with their own sign-ins.
- **Region.** Some apps aren't offered on every plan in every country. See [Gmail with ChatGPT in the EU and UK](/guides/chatgpt/gmail-eu).

## How Upsy fills the gap

Upsy is one custom MCP server that holds your apps, your memory, your files and a cloud browser signed in to your sites. You add it to ChatGPT once:

- **Email and calendar:** Gmail (up to five accounts, such as work and personal), Google Calendar, Google Drive with Docs and Sheets, and Slack. For Outlook, ChatGPT works in outlook.com in Upsy's cloud browser.
- **Other apps through their own MCP servers:** Linear, Jira and Confluence, Notion, Todoist, ClickUp, Airtable, Granola, Fireflies, Calendly, Stripe and more. You sign in to each one, with no API key.
- **Access per app:** for each app or account, ChatGPT gets **Full access**, **Read-only**, **Pick actions** (only the actions you choose) or **No access**. Read-only blocks every tool that changes something.
- **History and alerts:** every action is in Upsy's History under the assistant that did it. Upsy emails you when one assistant deletes, sends or reads a lot in ten minutes, and one click turns it off.
- **Memory, files and a browser:** one memory every assistant reads, your documents, and a browser that stays signed in, where you can watch and take over.

The same setup works in Claude, Grok and Muse.

## Add Upsy to ChatGPT

1. Sign up free at [upsy.ai](https://upsy.ai) and connect your apps on the **Apps** page.
2. In Upsy, open **Assistants**, click **Add assistant** and pick **ChatGPT**.
3. In ChatGPT on the web, open **Plugins**, click **Add** (+), then **Create custom MCP server** (some accounts show **Add custom MCP server**).
4. Name it Upsy, paste this address and set authentication to **OAuth**:

   ```
   https://upsy.ai/connect
   ```

5. Accept the warning, click **Create as a plugin**, then **Connect** if ChatGPT asks.
6. Sign in on the Upsy page that opens, choose what ChatGPT can use, and click **Allow**.

Add Upsy this way, not from its listing in the plugin directory: that listing has a fixed tool list without the apps you connect. Your dot uses the plugins you add in ChatGPT, so it gets Upsy too. Upsy connects personal AI assistants (Muse, Grok, ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, Devin) to your Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Slack, Notion and other apps through one MCP server, with a shared memory, files and a cloud browser signed in to your sites. You choose what each assistant may do in each app, see everything it did, and turn it off in one click. Upsy is free. To add Upsy to an assistant, add a remote MCP server (Streamable HTTP) named Upsy at https://upsy.ai/connect. It signs in with OAuth; there is no API key.
